Introduction

With the lure of a monthly $500 bonus chasing most Medium writers, many writers might suffer from wrist fatigue. For the sake of this article, it refers to that ache or discomfort you feel at your wrist after you have been typing away at your computer for hours.

You probably call it some other name. Regardless, for those who have experienced it, that ache stands between you and the next article. So, it is hard to ignore.

What Can I Do To Ease Wrist Fatigue?

  • If you spend long periods at a keyboard, take regular breaks.
  • When you type, keep your wrist in a relaxed, neutral position.
  • An ergonomic keyboard and foam or gel wrist support may help.
  • If you’re a gamer, try wrist weights or wear soft wristbands.
  • If the pain is so bad, apply ice and wrap a plastic bandage around it.
  • Try working with an occupational therapist to stretch and strengthen your wrists.
  • Overall maintain adequate hydration and nutrition.

How to Improve Wrist Position

The best position for writers to adopt while typing is what we call “straight”. There is also a proper position for using the mouse. Please see the images below.

Stretches to Ease Wrist and Arm Aches and Fatigue

There are exercises that ergonomics experts have recommended to ease wrist and arm aches. I would urge you to check first with your occupational therapist or physician for those that are suitable for you.

Prolonging the use of Your Hands

To keep yourself from getting wrist fatigue, it is important to stretch before you write. Stretching improves not only your upper body strength and your flexibility. It also improves your blood circulation. This promotes proper blood flow to the brain and the rest of the body. Please take frequent breaks. Organize your work in such a way as to meet your deadlines without damaging your body. If the ache is lingering, it might be time to see your physician to rule out other causes.
