Shout-out to a Woman Whose Name I Can’t Say
For the woman (refugee) I’m coaching, and why she is a true source of inspiration
About 5 months ago we met. I had lived in this country for 29 years. She’s my age and had been moving between shelters and homes.
She just received the keys to a permanent home back then. Volunteering for a refugee organization, I would make her comfy here and show her the way around from that moment.
So, what’s up with this lady?
In my eyes, she’s killing it.
With a demanding integration program, learning the local language, three (!) voluntary positions, babysitting, making art, networking for jobs, following courses within her field, giving human rights webinars, and having the government look over her shoulder all the time.
Oh yes, and she is curating a (women rights) activism website. Founded in her home country, moderating from here.
She seizes every hour of the day. To develop, learn, enjoy, and care.
Fled for political reasons from home. Away from family members. She stands up for human rights which most of us take for granted. In her home country, it doesn’t work like that. Especially not for women.
And she’s worried if she’s a good citizen. This can break my heart.
Powerful, dedicated, and so real. And oh yes, she’s hella funny! We can laugh out loud together. She can deal with stuff with humour.
Of course, she does way more than ‘needed’. Most of all, I wish for her a sustainable, enjoyable, and comfortable flow. She shows me how many hours exist in a day. And how much we can do for others.
If only 5% of people on Earth take on 5% of what she’s doing for the world, we can make the world a better place.
And let’s please laugh together while doing so :-)
Thank you, S, for showing me what we can be. Plus, for coaching me occasionally instead of the other way around.
