Shouldn’t We All Stand Against Gossip Culture at Workplaces Now?

It eats productivity like termites.

Have you ever noticed a small group of employees speaking in hushed tones when you passed by?

I did that and it was very stressful all the time.

I worked in a company for 4 years. I was a very hardworking person. Therefore I got success rapidly as compared to so many other workers.

I got my first award after completing my first year and that was very rare to achieve by working for just one year. It built a jealousy factor in so many co-workers there and they started gossiping about me.

They started discussing my personal life. They strived to spread false rumors about my promotion and portrayed it as gifted not earned.

Although, all of my seniors were so happy with my work. But the decorum of that workplace was becoming so undesirable for me day by day.

The gossip culture of that workplace had numerous negative effects on me. I am describing them below shortly:

Decreased job satisfaction

That atmosphere of back-biting and criticizing my work negatively decreased my job satisfaction. I started finding that workplace very toxic for my mental health and growth.

I was working hard, getting a very handsome amount of salary but I was not happy. I started avoiding my colleagues. One or two of them were very supportive but that didn’t make a difference.

But I noticed a strange thing there. I observed that 90% of people in that company were super hypocrites and that was the worst thing for me there.

Sense of betrayal

When I started realizing that my private matters and work-related issues were being discussed behind my back, I started feeling a sense of betrayal.

I started finding myself unable to work productively due to trust issues. It was making me unhappy and mentally upset.

I started feeling that I was consuming more energy to face that gossip culture rather than working for that Organization.

After spending 3 years working in that company, I realized that gossip-driven culture was ingrained in that Organization’s identity. The authorities were a bit convinced that this behavior should be tolerated.

Employees were more engaged in gossiping rather than focusing on projects and deadlines. It was causing an overall reduced performance.

Just because of that stressful and bad culture of gossiping, the turn-over rates were also so high there.

I resigned

I was working to provide financial support to my family. Just because of that, I tolerated that place for 4 years. But finally, I resigned just because of the distressing atmosphere of that place.

Because I started feeling that it was decreasing my productivity. That company lost so many hard-working people just because of that bad atmosphere.

Unfortunately, that company went bankrupt after that. But I work in a very productive place now. I have a great spot in this Organization. They don’t tolerate those behaviors which can harm the reputation of workers and the Organization itself.

Final thoughts:

Gossip culture can have far-reaching negative effects, impacting not only workers but also the Organization as a whole. We can never give our best in this kind of atmosphere.

It badly affects the mental health of an Organization’s employees. I just want to spread this message to eradicate this gossip culture from the workplaces.

Because there was a time when I was compelled to work in that kind of place where I was not happy. I was compelled due to my financial problems.

I don’t want to let anybody suffer from that kind of experience. I would request all the company honors and workers out there to stand straight against this gossip culture in workplaces.

Because it’s very devastating for the future of an individual as well as an Organization.

Be happy and spread positivity!
