Should Work Be Fun?
This is for those of you who hate going to work
A very common misconception among people is that work should be fun. Who promised us this? Work is an obligation that needs to be met every single day of the weekday (if we’re lucky) for a good chunk of our lives if we want to have basic necessities such as shelter and food (if our work is able to cover it).
What control do we have in work? Can we choose what we do, how we do it, and when? The answer to these questions is no most of the time. Work is a place where we are given a task, told how to do it, and just have to do it. So how can this be fun.
Your life outside of work should be fun to lead a happy life but we are so absorbed in the working life and want to escape our realities that we only focus on work. We think that work will bring us joy and pleasure.
Maybe a promotion or a bonus will give you pleasure but it will pass quickly. True pleasure and peace lies with spending quality time with the people you love and engaging in activities that bring you joy. This kind of happiness has a positive impact on your life.
The more we seek happiness in work, the more unhappy that we will be. If you can turn your hobby into a paying job, that is really awesome but most people can’t and need to hold a real job to make a living. That is why our lives outside of work determine the quality of our lives.
When people don’t have happy and fulfilling lives during their personal time, they turn to work to fill this gap but that is a big mistake. That is half-assing living and not wanting to take responsibility because you are in the driver’s seat during your personal time and have the option to do what you want to do.
But we only come up with excuses because we are lazy and don’t want to live life. We want life to control us and push us to places. We don’t want to take action and be responsible for our own actions and that is why we rely on work so much to be happy.
Just remember that work is where we go so we can secure means to be able to live the life that we desire outside of work. It isn’t supposed to be fun and it isn’t most of the time. See everything in its right perspective and all will be well.
Work is work and life is what happens outside of work.
