Should Freelancers Work to Fill their Wordcount? — Why I Said NO
The story of my buyer being unreasonable and hard to work
One of the pricing strategies for freelance writers is word count. If a buyer purchased 2,000 wordcounts from you. They would expect 2,000 more words written by you.
I hate the word count pricing strategy, but sadly, it is the matrix that freelancing platforms use to sell their writing. This forces writers to not be concise with their writing, instead, they aim to maximize their word count.
The problem with this strategy is oftentimes the readership isn’t fantastic and has a lot of fluff in their writing.
What Writing Should Be
The first 100 words in the article matter to a reader a lot. To get the most amount of traction and readership. Writers need to be concise with how they write and perfectly capture their reader's attention.
Why Writers Need to Change and Evolve
If what we writers learn to fluff and create longer stories, I hate to break it to you. But that comes in the specialization of AI writing. AI writing is already taking over most beginner writing in the ability to push word count to fill a searcher's request for information.
Maybe this is why many beginner writers are complaining about AI writing stealing their job. If writers don’t find want to get their skills taken away from them, they should learn to write uniquely and stand out from conventional writing styles.
Our Style of Writing Needs to Change
We should be learning how to share more by writing less. Information online has become so abundant that we lose track of writing content that really matters.
