Shona Banana

Playtime with Princess Cat

She contemplates me, ears lined up like antennae, hypnotically transmitting the most important message the air waves have ever borne witness to.

Play with me. Now.

As I come up with obstacle course innovations, she pours over the furniture and flips acrobatically in the air.

My heart freezes in fear, as she disappears behind the sofa in a cloud of green feathered dust.

Only to re-emerge, having emphatically landed on trusty paws.

She indulges me as I sing made-up songs called Danger Cat, whose tune sounds suspiciously like Spider Man.

And I lovingly call her Shona Banana*** because I can’t think of any other word that rhymes with Shona

As I regale her with twenty kisses, morning noon and night She stays, sometimes underfoot, but always in sight.

*** To be completely honest, I also call her “kumir chana” and “bandor chana” sometimes, which respectively mean in Bengali — baby crocodile and baby monkey.
