Shifting Homes
Travelling back to the land of my birth

I am on some kind of strange journey. An emotional journey. A restorative journey.
I have always sought respite from the stressors of life by the sea. It has been my ‘go to’ place. The place I now call home is surrounded by water — the Baltic Sea — but not the sea as I grew up to know. There are no rolling waves or tides where I live. But it is beautiful!

Returning to Australia, the country of my birth, in the summer was something I look forward to. This time I knew it would provide some much-needed solace after a year that has been full of work with little downtime.
And I was right! We have a spot by the beach — thanks to some wonderful friends — where we can relax and enjoy an amazing view any time of the day.

I now know that this place of my birth is not my home. My dreams have been filled with my ‘new’ home. The people and places that I see daily. The extreme seasons. The gentle water that freezes in the winter.
This is a new feeling for me. A nice feeling. This beach and this place where I was born is familiar, yet no longer my home. I will always enjoy coming back here, to the familiar sound of the waves, the slow nasal drawl of their English, the upside-down seasons, the burning sun. But my home is now the beautiful archipelago I live in.
Where my heart is.
