3 Steps to Shift Your Identity and Become Exactly Who You Want to Be

Are you dissatisfied with life? Good! Dissatisfaction is a catalyst for change.
What is the best way to change yourself? Identity shifting. Similar to an actor, you actually become a new version of yourself.
Clark Kegley is an identity-shifting coach and a YouTuber with 1.32 million subscribers. Here are his 3 steps to reinventing yourself to get ahead of 99% of people.
1. The Pain Teacher
Do you have the “Sunday Scaries?” When Sunday comes around, do you get anxious because you have to go to a job you’re not satisfied with the next day? You can use these painful feelings as a teacher. Negative emotions are a call to action. When you know what you don’t want, you can figure out what you do want.
2. Create the 2.0 Vision of Yourself
Design your dream character of yourself. This allows you to tap into one of the strongest emotions — excitement.
3 areas to focus on when you’re visualizing the 2.0 version of yourself:
- Work — what do you want your job to look like? What’s your aspirational hourly wage? Be bold here! Do you want to make $100/hr? $1000/hr?
- Rest — what do you want your body to look like? What are your relationships like?
- Play — what adventures do you want to go on? What kinds of things do you want to experience?
Revisit this step every morning and night. You have to SEE yourself as this new person.
3. Bridge the Gap
You know what you don’t want. You know what you do want. Now you have to bridge the gap between the two. Make a specific plan of how you’ll get from old life to new life. Do something every day that reconfirms your new identity.
Clark says he likes the term “Ready. Fire. Aim.” instead of “Ready. Aim. Fire.” because you get caught in the “Aim” and never end up firing.
In other words, figure out what you want to do, get ready to do it, and then just get started. You can readjust (“Aim”) after. Don’t use preparation as a way to procrastinate.
Are you ready to create the 2.0 version of yourself? Don’t think about it. Just do it. Ready. Fire. Aim.
