She’s Somebody’s Daughter
Think about this when you’re tempted with of any type of porn

“She’s Somebody’s Daughter.”
Several years ago, I drove past a billboard in downtown Nashville, TN (where I live) that blared the above three words. Underneath those words was a picture of a forlorn teenage girl. That was all there was to the ad. That was all that was needed.
Immediately upon viewing that ad, I thought of a quote I’d read a few days from a former porn producer who renounced his profession upon coming to faith in Jesus. While the article is no longer active on the web, still we need to listen to his words:
“How would you feel if…I walked up to you…and congratulated you on the scene your little girl performed for me the day before, in which I’d paired her up with a few men for my latest pornographic production? Legal adult or not, and regardless of whether she’s ‘an adult making her own decisions,’ I guarantee you wouldn’t be okay with it, and you’d undoubtedly hate me. So if it’s not okay to watch pornography when it’s your little girl in the starring role, why’s it okay when it’s someone else’s?”
Think about that the next time you’re feeling pulled into viewing a sexually-charged picture. It doesn’t matter if the actress, actor, or model is rich and famous or if (s)he is a victim of sex trafficking. That person, regardless of their lifestyle, is prostituting him or herself into darkness that goes beyond the obvious spiritual consequences and will end up impacting them in every way — relationally, emotionally, and even physically. Would we want that for our own daughter (or son)? And if not, why are we seemingly giving our approval to someone else’s son or daughter involved in it?
The reality behind the image
What if we truly remembered that the person in the image — as well as all those who will be enslaved because of that image — is ‘somebody’s son’ or ‘somebody’s daughter?’
What if we truly remembered that everyone trapped in this darkness is someone for whom the Son of God shed His blood and conquered their personal hell so that they can be welcomed into the Father’s arms as His specially-adopted son and daughter?
What if, instead of allowing our eyes to linger onto the lust and filth, we instead prayed for the son(s) or daughter(s) being photographed or videoed?
The BIG picture behind the picture
Let’s take this a step further.
What if, before taking that second or third lingering look, we instead took time to think about the families that will suffer and even be destroyed because of how this image fed one of the spouse’s addiction? What if we envisioned the children who will grow up in a broken home because of how pornography destroyed one or both of their parents?
What if we truly realized that pornography — no matter how ‘refined’ it may be — is a crime not only against God but also against our marriages, our families, and indeed against humanity?
We can’t run away from it
If we define ‘pornography’ as any image that excites our sensuality, we cannot escape the fact that it is all around us. It is (sadly) in the mainstream — and none of us can completely escape its tentacles. It begs for our attention in the form of billboards on the highway or pop-up Google ads that showcase suggestive (sometimes very suggestive) photos that we didn’t go looking for. Like it or not, we’re all going to ‘bump into’ pornography at some point.
What do we do when (not if) that happens? Do we remember the ‘somebody’s daughters (and sons)?”’
Final ‘what if’
What if a critical mass of Jesus-followers heeded this call? Think of the numbers of people who would leave that web of darkness by virtue of our prayers! Think of the decline of affairs and divorces. Think of the lives — the “sons and daughters” — that would be spared this horror. Think of the families that would remain intact!
Together, we can foment a spiritual revolution that can shake this nation — and the world.
Because after all, they are not only ‘someone’s’ daughters. They are OUR daughters (and sons). They are OUR families.
Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter. (Proverbs 24:11, NIV)
