Summary

Hassan Sharman is considering divorcing her husband due to his increasing weight and unhealthy eating habits, which she fears will lead to obesity and associated health risks.

Abstract

Hassan Sharman has expressed her dissatisfaction with her husband's weight gain and poor eating habits, which she believes are leading him down a path toward obesity. Her husband, who is otherwise a good partner, does not drink, smoke, or womanize, and is actively involved in family life. However, his preference for takeout over home-cooked meals and his genetic predisposition to obesity have raised concerns for Hassan. She has implemented strict eating rules in their household to encourage a healthier lifestyle, similar to her own, which includes low-calorie meals and regular physical activity. Hassan's stance has sparked debate on whether her threat of divorce is a measure to protect her husband's health or an unfair criticism of potential disability. The article further discusses the broader implications of obesity, citing statistics and health risks, and offers preventative steps such as healthy eating, active living, and water therapy to maintain a healthy weight.

Is being overweight a dealbreaker for you?

Divorce is getting crazier by the day. What happened to being each other’s support till — like forever?

My head is spinning right now after hearing Hassan Sharman reiterate what seems to be a never-ending off-putting about her husband. She is a control freak, I give her that. But her husband doesn’t exactly, make it easier.

Hassan’s husband is one of the good ones. He doesn’t drink, smokes, or womanize. He’s a hard worker and a goofy guy. He spends time with his family and helps around the house. Hassan is happy with the man she’s married to, except for his eating habit.

Her husband eats takeout more than home-cooked food. He’s adding weight like his father. Hassan’s father-in-law is 5.11 and he weighs 320 pounds. He can barely stand straight, let alone walk.

Apparently, obesity runs in their genes and Hassan isn’t at all happy about it. She thinks her husband is slowly becoming obsessed with his current weight of 212 pounds and he is 6.1 ft. Hassan has threatened to end their marriage if he gets any fatter.

At the moment, she doesn’t eat in the same room as her husband. She said she can’t stand the sight of him. She doesn’t want to end up with a disabled spouse, and she’s reaching her breaking point.

Hassan has some rules about eating. She doesn’t eat late-night food. She eats healthy low calorie food and has active physical activity. I understand she made changes to her lifestyle in other to keep her family from getting obsessed like her father-in-law.

As much as I criticized her strict rules about food, I couldn’t help but agree with her decision to keep her husband’s weight in check. When you see your partner in trouble, you have to do anything to save them, right?

But divorce seems too soon to be on the table, which left me thinking. Is Hassan criticizing the disabled or is she concerned about her husband’s health?

Why you should be concerned about getting too fat

Obesity is a medical condition characterized by excess body fat. And too much body fat can increase your risk of additional health problems and may cause health problems.

Some of the main signs of obesity are fatigue, joint or back pain, low self-esteem, snoring, and frequent sweating.

According to a Harvard study, one in three adults is obese, or about 36% of the US population, while 10% which is about 500 million adults worldwide are obesed. And by 2030, it is estimated that 20% of the world population will be obese.

Being obese can affect your quality of life and have serious health consequences, including heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, cancer, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, joint problems, and sleep apnea.

Also, if you are living with obesity, be prepared to pay more in living expenses each year than the average American. Obese people pay more out of pocket than others. Medical costs for obese people are $1,429 higher each year than those of normal weight.

The worst thing about obesity is that it is one of the top five causes of death. It causes more than 2.8 million deaths each year. The other four main causes are high blood pressure, smoking, high blood sugar, and physical inactivity.

A study shows that Americans consume 23% more calories than they did in the 1970s. Although we consume less sugar than before, we continue to consume more sweeteners and high-calorie diets. If you eat more calories than you burn, your body will store the extra energy as fat. Over time, the pounds will add up.

Steps to prevent getting overweight

As someone who was once overweight, it won’t be an easy journey. Quitting a bad habit never is. But when you look at the stats on obesity, you have no choice but to get in on a healthy lifestyle plan.

Exercising is one of the strategies that come to our mind when we think about weight loss. However, for someone who doesn’t like going to the gym or doing heavy lifting, there are simple habits you can include in your daily routine to keep fat off for good.

Eating healthy diets makes the top of this list. Now I’m not saying you should adopt a specific diet to keep your weight in check. However, if your diet isn’t very healthy, that can trigger a lot of metabolism issues.

You can eat all food and still maintain a healthy weight if you count down the number of calories in the food you eat. For example, if you like sweet things, you can avoid eating pastry food completely and eat 2 chocolate bars instead when you crave sugar. It is important you pay attention to the frequency and amount of what you eat.

Next, keep an active daily life. Exercising is more than just building muscles and crushing your bones. And you don’t need to be at the gym or buy equipment to do simple exercises. Walking to your workplace, and walking around the house doing chores can quickly add up to 2000 steps a day, which is what you need to burn 55 calories daily for a person who weighs 100 pounds.

A person with an active lifestyle takes about 4,000 steps a day. If you lead an inactive lifestyle and walk less than 4,000 steps per day, you can start with 250 to 500 steps per day. Then increase your step count by 250 per day (or every other day of your choosing).

Make drinking water a regular habit. I know most people don’t like drinking water, however, the Japanese use water therapy as an alternative plan to weight loss and good health.

Japanese water therapy involves drinking lots of water, especially on an empty stomach, to improve their metabolism and promote weight loss.

As much as carbs, proteins, and vitamins are an essential part of our lives, so is water. It is essential for survival and makes up 60% of our body. This is why health experts advise us to drink at least eight to ten glasses of water every single day to flush out the toxins and ensure the smooth functioning of the body.

Drinking a large glass of water in the morning on an empty stomach will rehydrate your vital organs. After a long night sleep, your organs are dehydrated and function poorly. Therefore it’s essential to restore your water balance in the morning before you eat anything.

I like to add flavors to my water which helps me drink more water throughout the day. So if you find plain water boring, consider adding fruits to your water. I have a list of fruit-infused water that helps with weight loss by detoxifying your body if you do know which fruits to use.
