She Refused to Wear a Mask During the Flight

The passenger on the airplane caused fear and panic to everyone in three hours.

Traveling is a challenging task during a pandemic. You are getting to the airport earlier than usual, waiting in the queue with lots of people, trying not to touch anything, not even peeing, and irritating your hands owing to excessive use of hand sanitizers. Oh, while all these are happening, you can’t even take fresh air out of your mask.

What a nightmare.

On my flight from Turkey to Italy, there was an Italian lady in my plane, sitting across me. I realized she didn’t have a mask when I met the cabin crew’s shocking eyes.

The hostess was in a panic, trying to warn the passenger and maintaining her distance. Her hands were shaky and wet:

“Madam, madam, please. You have to wear your mask.”

Wearing a mask has become a norm for all societies in 2020. A few years ago, if I had seen a person wearing a mask at the airport, I would have found it weird.

Ask me how not wearing a mask in our daily lives seems absurd right now.

And, the lady insisted not to wear a mask. “I can’t stand it,” she said.

Because of this fatal virus on our planet, millions of people died, and the number doesn’t decrease. And, she keeps everyone at risk simply because she can’t stand it? Well, okay.

“Madam, if you can’t wear a mask, you must use a face shield,” the hostess said while handing it to the passenger. The woman refused to wear the shield as well.

You can’t prevent the contagion of ignorance, you see.

The hostess, then, told other passengers to sit somewhere farther than the ignorant lady. It was surprising how the hostess stayed calm and maintained control although she must have been so nervous.

After some time, the hostess returned with a complaint petition. She warned the ignorant passenger again: “if you insist on not to wear a mask, the police will meet you at the airport.”

To which she responded:

“Yeah, sure, whatever.”

The hostess continued: “you are responsible for any charge for causing problems to our passengers’ health.” And, the passenger started, at that point, with her loud voice:

“We’re going to Italy. The Turkish police can do nothing to me.”

Well, do you have to make it political?

Long of short, she refused to wear a mask during the flight, leaving all of us in anxiety and paranoia.

This pandemic has shown me how human beings are responsible for immeasurable and irreversible actions. We harm our earth, animals, plants, and ourselves. Yet, our ignorance knows no boundaries.

In ancient times, when an earthquake occurred, people thought that God was angry with them. Then, geography found reasons and called the events “natural phenomenons.”

In the 21st century, we have passed beyond both God’s fury and science’s answers for what happens in the world.

This century has the most innovative technology and tools to find solutions for everything. Yet, it can offer us no explanation for our motives to destroy the planet, nor their consequences.

We’ve pulled the pin out of the grenade and begun our self-annihilation.
