Doggerel

Painting by Susan Alison

Sometimes, Dog, when he’s called is too enthralled with his new friends’ nether ends to tear himself away from his smelly play.

He hasn’t a clue that you’re nearly blue in the face from calling his name, bawling til you’re hoarse. Of course, he’ll have no remorse when the force of your cries makes him realise he should be with you — then — he’ll run off into the blue!

It’s when he’s all wet and muddy, that you become his best buddy. To your side he will race, rub his whiffy fur in your face, leave paw marks on your silk shirt, sharing his precious dirt.

It’s a marvellous gift, he thinks, and the more evil it stinks, the better!

A notable life lesson to be learned from this dog-doggerel is that the filthier the dog, the friendlier he gets.
