Shadows Fall Over Montenegro

September Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Shadows”

When the clouds choke the sun.

It was the last hour of my trek through the mountains of Montenegro. The members of my tour group, having snapped photos of the blue water down below, were putting away their cameras while I sat perched on a rock overlooking majestic Kotor Bay.

I was young, but I had worries. Would I make my plane back to Scotland in time? Would I be able to stay in graduate school so far from home while the deep depression threatened to drown me?

I’d had my little vacation, but now I was heading back into the fray.

As I fretted, a cloud passed in front of the sun. In an instant, the colors changed from dark blues, grays, and greens to the golden sheen of sunset.

My breath caught. I stood up — it seemed I had no choice but to worship this rite of Nature at my full height. For the next five minutes, as long as this shadowy light lasted, I clicked away with my camera and drank with my eyes.
