Summary

The web content is a poetic exploration of the nocturnal life of shadows, personifying them as entities with their own activities and interactions, which are observed by the narrator.

Abstract

The poem "Shadow Play" by Lori Carlson delves into the dual existence of shadows, which come alive when the observer sleeps. It portrays a world where shadows lead a parallel life, engaging in social activities and even confrontations. The narrator, intrigued by this hidden world, follows their shadow and witnesses a violent encounter, revealing a darker, more complex nature of shadows. The poem suggests that shadows, like humans, have layers of depth and personality, and it concludes with the philosophical notion that shadows can cast shadows of their own, ad infinitum. The content also includes an invitation for readers to support the author by becoming Medium members, which benefits both the platform and the writers they enjoy reading.

Shadow Play

Even shadows have lives of their own

When I sleep, your life begins anew — As though keeping up with me all day isn’t enough You escape to clubs and bars, restaurants and theaters Mingling with your own kind It’s a whole new world out there on the other side A mirror image, but not quite the same There’s something sinister in the darkness And you may not return again Tonight, I slip from my bed to follow you Slide along moss-covered walls to avoid detection And as I turn a corner, there you are, throwing punches Into what appears to be thin air With closer inspection, I make out a form Weaker than yours, fallen to the ground In a language I do not know, you bellow commands How are you so patient with me? As I turn to leave, a street light streaks a glow upon you And I notice, you have one too — Shadows casting shadows casting shadows Infinitely
