Sex Scheduling

Why you should DO IT

This might not be news to you, but 2020 is not the sexiest year in history. By far. Personally, I haven’t been too randy largely because I’m chunky, emotionally drained, and I have not had any kind of regular waxing of my lady bits. (Is it just me that doesn’t want to have perished from a terrible virus because I needed to pay a stranger to pull hair from my labia during a global pandemic?)

Also, because I’m not regularly leaving my house for my job, my days congeal into a soup of mornings and evenings and time passes at a ridiculously quick rate. Days turn in to a few days and before I know it, it’s been a week since I’ve done anything in our bed with my husband. And that’s not okay.

I usually write about self improvement and productivity, so why should I care to write about my sex life? Well, it turns out, sex is significantly better for your health than most people think. And, interestingly, it can make you more productive, too. But, like any self improvement goal, you need to actually do it to make it work. And for me, these days, that means scheduling sex.

Is that weird? Maybe. But I’m trying to be the best human that I can be and that means doing all the things.

Why is sex so good for you? Well, first of all, people that have sex on a regular basis have better immune systems. According to WebMD, people who are sexually active take fewer sick days. I don’t know about you, but these days, I’ll take anything that I can get to improve my immune system.

Second, sex can lower your blood pressure. Oxytocin is one of the hormones that is released when you’re intimate with another human (not with yourself — sorry, single people) and oxytocin can lower blood pressure. I also don’t need to mention (but I will anyway) that a good roll in the hay can add to your daily count of cardio minutes.

Third, according to a recent survey, “people may feel more productive throughout the day if they set the tone with morning sex”. Two of my favorite things combined. Sex and productivity.

And, for all of my gentlemen out there, regular ejaculation will make you less likely to contract prostate cancer. Warding off something so serious by doing something so fun? I don’t see the down side to any of this.

Lastly, in general, sex reduces stress and anxiety and improves your sleep (just make sure you pee first). While I don’t necessarily always want to do the nasty (mostly because . . . I’m nasty. Quick poll: Anybody else not showering as much these days?), I’ve discerned that it’s important to make sure it happens.

Is it slightly unsexy for the alarm on my phone to go off three times per week at 10pm that says “Have sex and have fun”? Sure. But you know what? I have never not enjoyed it once we got started. It’s kind of like working out — I’m not always excited to start off my morning run, but I always feel great when I’m finishing it.

At a time when people are lonely and sick and sad, if you are fortunate enough to have someone in your life with whom you can do a little belly bumping, do the rest of the world a favor and take advantage of it. It will make you healthier, it will make you happier, and, chances are, it will do the same for your partner.
