Seventh Time’s the Charm
On my seventh foray to Black Rock City

I’m doing it again. Going to Burning Man.
Yeah, I can’t figure it out either. I’m not particularly adventurous outside the confines of my own constantly percolating head. Camping? Please.
Nor am I particularly interested in transforming my life. I like my life. It’s a good life. Not perfect, but it’s a very good life. No need for huge upheavals of the soul and spirit here, thanks.
But the packing is mostly done and in the morning we’ve got a 6am flight to Sacramento where our bikes and our gear lives. We’ll pick up the U-Haul, go to the storage unit and haul out all the dusty stuff we shoved into that 5 x 5 space last year. We’ll load all that up and trundle on over to Natomas Bike Shop where our good friend, John, will help us get my partner’s bike and my trusty adult tricycle onto the truck.

Then it’s off to Reno.
I like Reno and I did not expect that. It’s got a gritty in-your-facedness that I look forward to each year. We stay downtown at the fabulously seedy Sands Regency Hotel and Casino with its views either of miles of neon or of the serenely disinterested mountains. One year we miscalculated and couldn’t get a room at the Sands on the way back after the event. We stayed at one of those monstrosities outside of town along the freeway. Never again.
And Saturday morning with the truck fully loaded with tent, bike and trike, futon, shower bags, sleeping bags, blankets, pillows, towels, tent stakes, tarps, camp chairs, coolers, food and gallons and gallons and gallons of water we head out to The Event.
So much has been written and even more has been photographed and videoed about Burning Man that I won’t even try to describe the maelstrom into which my partner and I are headed. But we’re taking AleXander’s art and my story with us. You’ll find both in Center Camp.
Suffice to say that I’ll be off grid and light years away from Medium for the next two weeks plus. I won’t even know my Medium earnings until they’ve already hit the bank. Can you imagine?
