Life gets complicated, but adding more lessons and strategies into your overflowing toolbox is one of the best ways to get the better end of the stick.

Carefully observe those around me, their mannerisms and how fast they climb the corporate ladder.

Although I don’t know their ingrained habits, I know they have a particular way of doing things.

It’s those little things that count, in which you get the most out of people and develop your own innate abilities.

Here are some things that may help you along your successful life journey.

One: Constantly do and be better than yesterday — don’t worry about anyone else

It’s easy to become bogged down in what others do and achieve.

In an industry where only strong-minded and highly efficient people survive, it’s essential to focus on growing your skills whilst ignoring the rest.

Concentrate on your job at hand, making that a priority.

Attend your appointments, say what you mean and mean what you say.

Be honest and upfront about your capabilities. Then, take on more tasks to develop your skills.

All of these traits produce a champion employee and a candidate for promotion.

As long as you finish every day, knowing you gave it your all, doing the best you could, the promotions and salary increase will come.

They may not come today, but eventually, it will happen for you.

Keep doing what you’re doing.

Two: Use an approach in line with someone’s personality

I found that you get a lot more out of people by tuning into their personalities, likes and dislikes.

What I mean by that is sometimes a softer approach is needed, and maybe a very raw one for others.

Usually, people prefer to be requested to do something in a kind tone, and friendly smile.

Despite your power over someone, it pays to be humble and kind in your approach.

In more ways than one, someone will appreciate it.

Three: Read a page or two of a book, or section in the newspaper

Depending on your industry, it’s essential to be on top of your game.

You could read various industry news- such as new developments in software or opportunities.

Perhaps you will need a newspaper subscription, journal or research paper.

Whatever it is, go the extra mile and know all you can about your industry.

Never allow yourself to get behind the game.

Four: At odds with a decision — do the following

Draw a line in the centre of your notepad digitally or on paper.

Then, on the top of the left & right-hand side, write the pros and cons of this decision.

Write as much as you can, filling in the whole page.

Once you do, the answer will come to you or appear on the page.

It’s also a great way of deciding and enforcing what’s important to you.

In the business of everyday life, we tend to lose track of why we’re doing this.

Five: Count backwards from 10 before you respond to someone

When answering a question or participating in a challenging situation, you want to ensure what you say is both intelligent and well thought out.

So, next time someone asks you a question, don’t feel compelled to answer right away or by cutting someone off.

Instead, allow some space and time to digest the question and think about your answer.

Usually, abrupt responses stem from emotion.

Emotion is necessary but may cause conflict and hurt others. Worse, it can hurt your chances of success.

For instance, parents know all too well that responding instantly to your child can sometimes upset them or cause friction.

Your children will remember, and you will be left feeling guilty.

Six: Start thinking about money when you are young

As a youngster, it’s completely normal to think we have a long time.

But those years have a strange way of creeping upon us, and soon enough, we’re a little older than what we wanted.

It’s essential to train your children to think about putting money away into a retirement fund early.

Once you start working, it’s necessary to grow your fund, however small, so that you will be well looked after when retirement does come around.

Soon enough, you learn to live without that small amount.

As you get a little older, contribute to the fund yourself.

Tax benefits for doing so are beneficial.

I always put a chunk of my salary in various investments, especially retirement.

Seven: Give everyone a chance by being less judgemental

We judge people at face value based on mannerisms and habits.

But, do we know what their life was and is like?

Unless you have walked in someone else’s shoes, it’s best to keep your judgements at bay and focus on improving yourself.

By adding some small life tools into our toolbox, we can not only enhance the quality of our personal and professional life but there is also a benefit of being well-liked by others.

Focusing on what we do, say, and react to others, whilst eliminating judgment, leaves the world open for opportunities and successes beyond our current reality.
