Happy to See Me

The ocean today rising, waving singing so happy to see me

It’s as if the ocean knows when my old cell phone — the one that now has been put out to pasture and only performs wake-up (alarm) duties — stirs and sounds at four o’clock every morning. It’s as if it then counts the hours (there’s about three, sometimes four, of them), minutes (anywhere from thirty on up), seconds (who knows?), till it sees my woolen-capped head rise approaching water along Pacific Avenue?

First cap, then head, then shoulders, then chest and soon and soon…

And then I crest and turn right onto Pebble Beach, and here I am, all of me, for all of the seven oceans to see. And this one does, and rises, waves, and sings. So very happy to see me again.

Oh, the feeling is so very mutual.
