Who doesn’t love watching shows that can lighten up the mood? Netflix, Prime Video, and HBO Max have many such shows you can add to your watch list today and forget all about the doom that is your daily life because who wants to go down that rabbit hole when you can indulge in sitcoms that make you escape reality and actually help you enjoy your meals, office breaks, and homework breaks in the best possible ways.

In no particular order, here goes the list of my top seven sitcoms:

1. The Office

I am Beyoncé, always,” says Michael Scott (Steve Carell), the quirky manager and boss. It can be said that Michael holds the whole weight of the show on his shoulders. Even though he may seem cringe-worthy and extremely incompetent sometimes, he knows how to make his viewers laugh.

With the blend of this little narcissistic yet fun twist to the boss’s image, Michael is like a dad in the show who makes a lot of stupid dad jokes, and you can’t just get enough of it.

The show became one of the most watched in 2020, with its addictive humor, the employees like Jim Harper (played by John Krasinski), and Pam Beesly, the receptionist (played by Jenna Fischer), the show is something that most of the people could relate to.

It shows the life of a white-collared employee in a classic office setting, made light with a blend of harmless and quirky humor and endless hours of pranks between employees. With a 9/10 rating on IMDb, the show is perfect for binge-watching.

2. F.R.I.E.N.D.S

It won’t be an exaggeration to say Friends is a comfort show for almost everyone who has watched it. For adults and teenagers alike. I say almost because some people just lack taste ( there, I said it. Don’t cancel me).

One of the reviews (it’s me, I’m the reviewer) says it is “one of the greatest and best sitcoms of all time.”

Quoting Joey Tribbiani, it would all be a “moo point” if we do not go into the show’s details and recommend adding it to the watch list. The 90s sitcom is one of the most popular watches on Netflix, even today, for a reason. The iconic bond of love, trust, and care between six friends; could it BE any better?

The show became a TV special during the pandemic, where most people found comfort in the lives and problems of these six friends. Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc) is an Italian actor that can woo any girl easily, and we don’t doubt the quality as he is adorable; Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry) makes jokes when he is uncomfortable; Monica Geller (Courteney Cox), the brilliant chef and clean freak who to viewer’s surprise, spoiler alert, gets married to Chandler.

Then we have the more kinky of them all, Phoebe Buffay, played brilliantly by Lisa Kudrow. Two other main characters who made a distinction between the fans of the show; Ross Geller (David Schwimmer), a paleontologist who loves to marry and stay committed after finding one true love but unfortunately gets divorced every time, and Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston), the girl Ross loved since they were in high school.

So now it is your call to watch the show and decide whether Ross and Rachel were “on a break” or not.

3. Never Have I Ever

A show that breaks all barriers of stereotypical beliefs regarding brown people, a reference used for people of the subcontinent.

Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) is a teenager whose life suddenly jolts when her father dies of a heart attack. Devi does not have a healthy relationship with her mother, something a teenager might be able to relate to. Mothers want the best for their children but often come off as pushing too hard, which gives the teenager mixed feelings about their parenting style.

Nevertheless, I will jump past the spoilers and revisit the show’s theme. It revolves around the drama, emotional roller coaster, and confusion of choice in any teenager’s life.

Each season, Devi learns to love herself the way she is, build a healthier relationship with her mother, and find a balance between friendship and love choices. Talking about love choices, the girl needs a guide to stop making bad decisions about love.

The best thing about the show is its take on diversity, as there are Asian, brown, and white people all under one roof, struggling in their own ways.

To sum it up, the show is an excellent option to binge-watch during work breaks, see how Devi gets through her many romantic mishaps and bad decisions, and how all of it comes together to improve her life.

This teaches adults and teenagers a great lesson, that mistakes help you grow, one way or the other. The following season is coming soon, and fans can’t wait to see what Devi has in store for us this time.

4. Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Brooklyn-99 is a criminally underrated show. The show has great humor and there is so much reality to the romantic relationships formed that you might relate to it.

Detective Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) is good at his job and is even better at his humor. There is an innocence to his character, as Jake never really grew up after a certain age regarding his behavior, but this is just what makes this show worth watching.

The show also has women in significant roles, equal to the men in the show. Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero) and Rosa Diaz (Stephanie Beatriz) are powerful detectives. We cannot get enough of Rosa’s “sass, and I don’t care(s),” Amy’s Character, and her need for admiration that most of us can relate to.

Though the show is rated 8.4 on IMDb and 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, if enough people had watched it, it definitely would have gotten higher ratings than any other show.

5. How I Met Your Mother

Though the show ended disappointingly, the bonds that took seasons to build were forgotten; still, the show is worth watching.

It is a journey of four best friends that eventually led the show to the story’s center, as the title suggests, how Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) found his wife and the mother of his children. Ted is seen as telling his children the story of the events that eventually led to him finding his wife — NO SPOILERS!

“It is almost impossible not to smile and have a good time during the show,” says a reviewer. The show was top-rated in the 2000s when it was aired and ended in 2014. The playboy character, Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris), makes the show better for everyone.

The best thing is though it may sound similar to any other sitcom, but the show was definitely not a rip-off and had its own distinctive essence to it.

6. Modern Family

Modern Family would have been the first if the list was made in order of the best on top. For those who do not like laughter tracks on every joke in the background, the show is the perfect fit for you.

The show has a positive take on adoption, gay relationships, marrying someone older if you’re in love, and healthy parenting; it is a perfect watch for adults and children alike.

Phil Dunphy(Ty Burrell) and Claire Dunphy(Sarah Hyland) constantly struggle to raise their three children, polar opposites. The Pritchett and Dunphy family are in for all kinds of crazy when it comes to keeping Family together.

Phil is constantly making bad dad jokes and simultaneously being his children’s friend and father, which he calls “peer-ranting.” We can’t get enough of him and his daddy issues.

So brace yourselves to laugh with every episode and get hours of Gloria’s (Sofía Vergara) hilarious Colombian accent.

7. Community

The last show on the list, the community, has an 8.5 IMDb rating and is described as “Snarky and Fast-paced, yet engaging.”

Jeff Winger (Joel McHale), a self-absorbed lawyer, gets debarred when it comes to light that he faked his Bachelor’s degree. With no motivation to study, he is forced to join Greendale Community College, where he aims for easy credit for his score so he can return to his practice as soon as possible.

There he makes friends, and as it is said that unexpected friendships are the best, the show proves they genuinely are.

From aiming to get out of college and using his “friends” at first, Jeff learns to love his new life, and with almost every episode, he, along with us, discovers a new lesson about life in the easiest and most comforting ways.
