Settling in a New Land
a leap of faith
“If the path is beautiful, let us not ask where it leads.” ~ Anatole France
Stepping into the unknown can be a daunting experience, especially when you’ve spent years nestled in the comfort of familiar surroundings. I, too, faced this predicament as I contemplated leaving behind my old life for a new beginning.
The prospect of bidding farewell to my home, my cherished social circle, and my well-trodden routine filled me with apprehension. To make matters worse, I was already grappling with a challenging phase in my life, intensifying my anxiety.
“Sometimes we can choose the paths we follow. Sometimes our choices are made for us. And sometimes we have no choice at all.” ~ Neil Gaiman
As I packed my belongings and prepared for the impending move, a whirlwind of thoughts swirled in my mind. Maybe this change would bring about the positive shift I needed. Perhaps it was the universe’s way of nudging me toward a new chapter. I wondered if life was beckoning me toward new horizons, offering guidance in its own enigmatic way. In the midst of these musings, I desperately searched for a silver lining in the inevitable.
Our destiny is frequently met in the very paths we take to avoid it.” ~ Jean de La Fontaine
The day of departure arrived, and it was a tumultuous affair. My heart was heavy with the weight of goodbyes, and tears flowed freely as I bid farewell to loved ones, friends, and the place I had called home for so long. As I sat beside my daughter in the cab en route to the airport, tears welled up in my eyes.
The journey to my new destination was a somber one, and even my attempts to focus on the positive aspects couldn’t stifle my emotional turmoil. I had visited the new country several times before the move, but the reality of settling in permanently was a different ballgame altogether.
The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it and join the dance.” — Alan Watts
I gradually began adapting to my new environment, determined to return to my home country every month as a way to ease the transition. However, practicality soon revealed the limitations of such a plan, both financially and in terms of time.
Slowly but surely, the new city began to grow on me. Pleasant experiences and encounters formed an unbreakable bond between me and my newfound home. Looking back, I realize that this decision, born out of anxiety and uncertainty, turned out to be the most important one of my life. It not only helped me grow as a person but also brought me extraordinary moments and introduced me to a remarkable life I would have never imagined otherwise.
“There are no wrong turns. Only paths we had not known we were meant to walk.” ~ Guy Gavriel Kay
When the universe gently nudges you towards change, it’s like an open invitation to embark on a new adventure. Don’t hesitate; take the bait. Explore uncharted territories, discover unfamiliar faces, and immerse yourself in fresh experiences. These endeavors, although initially daunting, possess the power to breathe new richness into your life.
“What if I fall oh but my darling what if you fly” ― J. M. Barrie
Taking a leap of faith can sometimes be a powerful and transformative experience, especially when faced with difficult decisions. It often involves stepping into the unknown with trust and confidence, even in the absence of complete certainty about the outcome.
Let's revisit a classic tale
A man was stranded in a desert with no water. He has used up all his supply. Realizing his dire situation, he kept walking, hoping for a miracle. Suddenly, he spotted a hut in the distance. Could it be real or a hallucination? With no other choice, he approached cautiously and found it to be genuine. Inside, he discovered an empty hut with a hand pump. He was overjoyed. He started working on the pump. Despite his efforts, no water flowed. Frustration set in, and he contemplated his fate.
Then, another glimmer of hope emerged—a bottle of water in the corner. As he was about to drink it, he noticed a note hanging from its neck. It instructed him to use the water to prime the pump and refill the bottle when done. He was in a dilemma; he hesitated, fearing he might squander his last chance if he used the water. Summoning all his courage, he took a leap of faith. He poured the water into the pump, working it until, suddenly, the sound of gurgling water filled the hut. Overjoyed, he quenched his thirst.
After refilling the bottle as instructed, he put the cork back and added one more line to the note: “Believe me, it works.”
We all have our own journeys to take our own choices to make. If the choices go our way, we can inspire people by telling them that sometimes it is good to take a leap of faith. If they don’t go our way, we can share our mistakes or experience our realizations and empower people to make the correct choices.
Life is too short to confine yourself to the cozy boundaries of your comfort zone. Embrace the unknown and let it shape your journey. Discover the myriad ways in which it can enrich the very essence of your being.
The only things I regret, and the only things I’ll ever regret, are things I didn’t do. In the end, that’s what we mourn. The paths we didn’t take The people we didn’t touch.” ~ Scott Spencer
