Serendipity: The Only Thing That an Entrepreneur Needs
Then how do you create serendipity?
When entrepreneurs are trying to define reasons for their success it is difficult to describe in technical terms why something happened, that is why serendipity is the best explanation for a successful entrepreneur.
Serendipity refers to being at the right place, at the right time with the right people, and making things happen. This term represents the factors that lead to discovering a once in a lifetime opportunity to create value through various entrepreneurial projects.
People and Opportunity
The two most important things with serendipity are people and opportunity. Although they can be seen as two different things they sort of complement each other as people create opportunities and opportunities to help you meet new people.
Being at the right place and at the right time is only a reference for being lucky enough to bump into the right people. People that have a similar entrepreneurial vision and which believe in that vision enough to dedicate themselves to an entrepreneurial project.
Serendipity allows us to create opportunities for people not only to become fortunate but also to grow and develop themselves through the help of others.
It was serendipity that brought Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs to meet at the University of California and develop a vision for Apple. Two people with unique abilities and skills that when combined created something exclusive, something that most likely wouldn’t have had success if it wasn’t engineered by Wozniak and marketed by Jobs.
With this example, I wanted to show that serendipity isn’t necessarily being lucky, it’s more like having faith and simply following your path in life as one-day serendipity will knock your way.
How do we create Serendipity?
By now you are probably wondering if serendipity can be created. As I said before, serendipity isn’t luck so it can be made and I will share with you a couple of ways that you can bring serendipity to your life and entrepreneurial journey, it is easier than you think.
Say Yes!
In order to profit from opportunities, you need to accept them no matter what they may be. I get many opportunities my way each week and some of them although they are not worth my time I say “yes, I will give it a go”!
A problem that I had in the past was avoiding opportunities as I didn’t see the value in them at the time. I like to believe that serendipity is what brought me to Medium.
This great platform was shown to me by a person who I meet at a regional meeting, a person who I didn’t know and which I decided to approach and get to know. That was me being in the right place at the right time and saying yes to Medium.
If you sit down and have thought there are probably moments in life where serendipity occurred for you but you never knew. That is why I urge you to keep saying yes to anything that comes your way.
Go out and meet new people
As people are one of the biggest factors to serendipity, the more people you get to know the higher the chances for serendipity to occur.
It may seem daunting to get to meet new people, especially when you are an introvert, but the only way we get to grow is by coming out of our comfort zone. That is the moment most moments of serendipity occur.
Each person that you meet has a story and a vision that can bring many opportunities. It is all about meeting the right people for what you have in mind from an entrepreneurial perspective.
These people also come with unique competencies that bring possibilities for new projects. Sometimes in life, you just need to find people that have a huge love for their craft and if you can bring these people together boom, you can make it big.
The best advice that I can give you is to socialize as much as possible by going to different events or even online webinars. This pandemic is certainly making serendipity more difficult to happen, but not impossible.
Gain more knowledge
Sometimes the opportunities are in front of you but you don’t have the abilities or knowledge to see them. That is why you need to constantly learn new things by reading.
This can even help you become more approachable when meeting new people or when faced with new opportunities.
Understanding the value that an opportunity can bring in the long term is vital. Many people don’t take opportunities because they want quick, short-term value but the big money in most cases comes from a long-term opportunity.
Serendipity can occur but you might need to occur again to make this opportunity even better by bringing a new person on board or learning something that is vital to your project as it can offer you a new perspective.
Don’t forget to Smile
Last but not least, remember to always smile no matter if you get an opportunity turned down. Smiling increases the chances for someone to approach you or for someone to accept an opportunity that you have to offer.
Keep your head high even in difficult times, your moment of serendipity will come and the more you smile the closer you will get to it.
Take-Aways
It is imperative to understand that serendipity just like success does not come early in life. It takes many life lessons to be learned through practice and failure to have that moment of serendipity to occur, but never the less don’t give up.
The most important thing for serendipity to occur is staying dedicated to your passion, your dream and the right people will come along with the right opportunity to create success.
An entrepreneur needs to be a visionary and see the thing that he requires. Once he or she has that knowledge all that remains is building an environment around them with the right circles of people and a dedication to their craft.
If you really believe in your dream it will happen, as long as you put the work in serendipity will come along to give you that huge push to success.
