Serendipity Says ‘Hello’
A Writer’s Life is Full of Surprises
Fellow writers and readers, something surreal happened yesterday. Call it a whispered wish, a prayer, or a thought like a wispy cloud in a pale blue sky. It was a simple request for help in writing my stories, and I uttered it as one often does, as the last thought at the end of a conversation, such as, “oh, by the way, do you mind…?”
The Meaning of Serendipity.
Consider the sound of serendipity as you form the word: there is a subtlety, a hint of movement, like a dandelion happily drifting across the blue.
Serendipity is defined as the fact of finding interesting or valuable things by chance https://www. dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/serendi
Setting Off On A Journey To The World of Literature.
Picture me, at my desk overlooking a garden where birds fly and hop between trees, flowers, and shrubs. We live in a little haven.
Sunshine streams through patio doors, open in the early morning while my husband and I share our first thoughts over steaming mugs of coffee, or sometimes sit quietly reading and meditating.
After breakfast and our few chores around the apartment, Charles heads for his workshop while I will be found at my desk, basking in the warmth of the autumn sunshine through the glass doors. Sometimes I sit on the recliner with my laptop balanced on a suitable book, comfortable and serene.
The 30-Day Writing Challenge.
I decided to do the challenge put forward by Dr Mehmet Yildiz and chose literature for my theme; I am currently writing the third article in the series. I have a list of my chosen authors, but I do not have all of the books to hand, and as it’s Lockdown, I have to rely on the internet for supplementing my information.
Unfortunately, I don’t have a cozy turret filled with volumes I can pick at will. Why a turret, you may ask? For no other reason than it seems romantic to have a turret filled with books way up there among the clouds!
A Little Gem in Our Retirement Village: a Library!
There is, though, hidden amongst our village gardens, a gem. A small cozy library, with a wooden floor, a table surrounded by several chairs, and bookshelves around the walls. Mostly, the books you find there are those related to my generation, which is to be expected, as most are donated by residents.
My thought yesterday was to wander there and see if, perchance, there may have been a book to read for relaxation; I was not particularly thinking of the writing challenge. In no great hurry, I called there in the late afternoon while on a short walk to catch some fresh air and stretch my legs.
I ambled in, making my way to the nearest shelves on my right, and as I drew close, my eyes fell on two books, right there in front of me. One, on Samuel Pepys’ diary, and another on the life of Isak Dineson, in text and pictures.
I was amazed and overjoyed, for as my eyes fell on the books, the realization dawned that here is the material I can use right now for the writing project. Samuel Pepys, the famous diarist of the 17th Century, and Karen Blixen, the Danish author who writes under the pseudonym of Isak Dineson.
I hadn’t thought of Pepys, yet here he was, asking to be on my list! As for Isak Dineson, it’s a worthwhile find, a book on her life I have not read before.
Gifts From Serendipity
That morning, I had whispered a request and it had been answered, quietly, without any actions on my behalf to fulfill it, apart from going for a walk.
Miraculous? Nothing out of the ordinary, you think? That’s how life works out.
In the afternoon, I had two books in my hand, when that morning I had none; I walked right to them, there they were, waiting for me. Gifts from serendipity.
A Setback Turns To Positivity
Before Lockdown, I suffered a second relapse within a few months of a chronic illness causing, among other symptoms, fatigue, which is alarming as at times I have no energy to even sit down and write. Last week, I had another setback, deteriorating further.
Here in Lockdown, in my little haven, I have all day to be immersed in another world. I have made a decision to ‘go with the flow’. I have determined not to fight against this illness, not to search countless medical articles trying to understand why it should worsen; I shall not waste time in endless questions as to why.
In acceptance comes the freedom to expand horizons, to find more dandelions drifting in the vast blue. Serendipity found me; I shall bask in the discovery.
Simply recalling this incident of serendipity boosts my morale, lifts me up, and brings wonder at its recall. In doing so, will I find release and healing? I am sure it waits for me as I embark on this journey into the worlds of individual writers.
I also expect to find more books waiting for me in unexpected places!
