Summary

A person wandering the streets at night, lost in thought about someone, unexpectedly encounters that very person, leading to a serendipitous moment of connection.

Abstract

In the midst of a cold, solitary walk through the city at night, the protagonist is consumed by thoughts of a particular individual, visualizing their image in their mind. Despite the chill that has them shivering, they find comfort in the mental picture, which serves as a means to cope with emotional turmoil. In a twist of fate, they literally bump into the person they've been thinking about, an encounter that brings an immediate sense of recognition and shared emotion. This chance meeting transforms into an unspoken, profound moment of connection, highlighting the beauty of serendipity in human interactions.

Opinions

  • The protagonist finds solace in the cold, using it as a form of self-imposed therapy to numb emotional pain.
  • There is a sense of resignation and acceptance regarding the uncontrollable physical reactions to the cold, viewing them as the body's natural attempt to preserve life.
  • The encounter with the other person is seen as a manifestation of the protagonist's thoughts, turning an imagined scenario into reality.
  • The moment of recognition between the two individuals is portrayed as a silent yet powerful exchange, transcending the need for words.
  • The narrative suggests that the joy derived from unexpected, serendipitous moments is of greater significance than any potential outcome of the encounter.

Serendipity

I silently wander through the midnight streets, ignoring each and every sound.

My mind dwells on this one picture of you.

The sidewalk becomes a white blur. I’m still walking although my feet feel frozen already.

The one outside resonance I can’t ignore.

For a split second, my body shakes uncontrollably in a vain attempt to warm up.

“It’s alright. It doesn’t know any better. It’s only trying to keep me alive”, I tell myself silently.

I dwell in the cold too, actually. Right now, it’s my means of cooling my desperately overheated head and heart. An equally vain attempt.

I don’t think. I just stare at this picture of you with my inner eye.

I run into a man.

We both stop and stare into each other’s wide eyes: the same horror, the same suddenly interrupted absence, the same quiet sadness, the same…

It’s you!

Never seen before, the image has become reality still. Different paths to the same desire. Different ways of life knotting without a single word exchanged.

The looks soften. Smiles spread across both our faces.

We have no idea where this will lead or if it will lead anywhere at all.

It doesn’t matter.

The happiness created by a random moment, that’s all that matters.

Serendipity.
