September in Florida

September is summer swelter with Hurricane warnings; A caress of cool Followed by a hug of heat; A morning of promise before An afternoon of disappointment; A promise that a Florida summer is Seven months long and far from over. September is a long reminder of what Makes us semi-tropical Even in the time of pumpkins and cider. A time when we feel disconnected from The places white with frost and Golden with leaves. Florida in September laughs at Pumpkin Spice Lattes And the packing away of White purses and shoes. Florida in September is a reminder of Why we live here all year long.

Tracy Aston recently laid out this wonderful welcome mat to autumn on Weeds & Wildflowers:

Reminding me that places beyond this long Southern peninsular are tiptoeing into autumn — feeling cool breezes, seeing frost in the mornings, watching foliage change from green to gold, scarlet, magenta, rust, and yellow. People elsewhere are unpacking sweaters, socks, jackets, and boots.

Sometimes, I forget that my area is the exception as we carry on wearing shorts and sandals, swimming and boating, and gardening as though winter will never arrive. Our handbags are still white or made of straw and there isn’t a piece of wool or flannel or corduroy to be found for many, many miles. We are barbecuing on our patios and sleeping with air conditioners humming. We complain about the humidity and obsess over tropical weather maps.

That is September in my world. How is September in yours?
