Senator Mitt Romney Says He Did Not Vote For Trump

It is no secret

People’s votes are not kept secret

It is common for people to endorse political candidates so it is no secret for whom many people will vote in elections. Ballots are still secret, but most people are willing to tell the name of the person who received their vote. That is true of political leaders as well. Senator Mitt Romney made his vote public.

In an article in The Hill by Marina Pitofsky on October 21, 2020, she writes that Romney did not vote for President Trump in the election this year. His office confirmed that but did not say whether or not Romney voted for Joe Biden.

Since his vote was in Utah, it may not have made a difference although Democrats are working hard for Biden in the deep red state. Utah is one of the states which has been doing mail-in voting successfully for years. It refutes Trump’s claims that Republicans do not favor mail-in voting.

Romney and Trump have had conflicts in the past, including that Romney supported the impeachment of Trump.

Pitofsky reported that Romney shared the following on Twitter:

“I have stayed quiet with the approach of the election. But I’m troubled by our politics, as it has moved away from spirited debate to a vile, vituperative, hate-filled morass that is unbecoming of any free nation-let alone the birthplace of modern democracy.”

“The president calls the Democratic vice presidential candidate ‘a monster;’ he repeatedly labels the speaker of the house ‘crazy;’ he calls for the Justice Department to put the prior president in jail; he attacks the governor of Michigan on the very day a ploy is discovered to kidnap her. Democrats launch blistering attacks of their own — though their presidential nominee refuses to stoop as low as others.”

Romney was the 2012 Republican Presidential nominee. Although Trump stated that he was no longer angry at Romney after he supported a Senate vote on Amy Coney Barrett before the election, Trump has regularly been at odds with Romney. He has called Romney a “loser.”

Trump did endorse Romney in 2012 and for his bid in 2018 for the Senate seat in Utah.

It is quite likely that Trump is seething with the news that Romney did not vote for him although he should have suspected that would be the case.

Although I moved back to Utah after Senator Romney was elected, I have met him on several occasions. He is an honorable person who still wanted to serve his country although he was a multi-millionaire in his seventies when he ran for the senate. He won handily in a state where he is popular even though he has not spent a lot of time living in Utah during his lifetime.

Senator Romney was born in Michigan and served as the Governor of Massachusetts from 2003 to 2007. He has been a Senator for the State of Utah since 2019 after Senator Orrin Hatch retired. He is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and is seventy-three years old.

Democrats are hoping there are others like Romney who are voting for Biden. There are organized groups of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who are mostly Republicans, who are voting for Biden.

This is a critical Presidential election. VOTING IS IMPORTANT!
