Selling Stuff

With Help From Seth

Okay, here’s one thing. You have a product to sell. It really does not matter what sort of product it is. It could be your online course or your book. It could be a bag of chips. This object or service you are selling either belongs to you, or it belongs to somebody else. In the end, you get paid for selling it.

What if what you are trying to sell is something as unownable as the air, sunshine, or dark?

Could you make some money selling this thing?

If I might interject something? (Words in bold italics font are from my spirit guide, Seth)

Sure. Go ahead.

Well, what you are talking about sounds like you want to sell snow to an Eskimo.

That’s probably not politically correct anymore.

Well, you do have a point there. Complain to the guy up there.

I thought you were going to say, “Arrest me.”

Nope, doesn’t work that way up here.

I think I’m having indigestion.

Well, you might very well be.

I think you ended that sentence with a preposition.

How can be be a preposition?

Well, a preposition locates something. If you are above it, or behind it, or on it. You don’t want to end a sentence with one.

Are you lecturing me?

No. It just seemed odd.

You do it all the time.

Well, that’s different. Plus, I’m going to look it up.

Up, Dear, is a preposition.

I know where you can have lots of hot flashes.

…..Slight pause while I looked up prepositions on Google. I think I need to go back to school.

Maybe we could get back on topic. I’d started this piece about salesmanship. Like if I were going to talk about selling my book that isn’t published yet.

Well, first you need to finish it.

Yes, I know that. But just suppose it is done. It has been edited, proofed, and polished by me.

Why you?

Because I can’t afford an editor or a proofreader, and I have to do that stuff myself. At least until the first book makes enough money so I can hire somebody to help me with the second one.

What else?

Then, I need to get a cover done. I will need an author’s website. I need to drum up interest. I need email addresses so I can let people know when it is finally published, and they can either get one for free and maybe review it or just buy it for $3.99 at Amazon.

You’re going to sell your book for $3.99?

Well, yes, I figured I would.

How about this? How about you put it on sale for $3.99, and normally, the price would be $6.99? People the world over tend to think of junk when they see a low price. They’ll think, “What’s wrong with it?” You came upon the same thing when you did psychic readings for $35. Lots of people seemed to be interested, they loved the free readings you did, but did they come back again?

Well, you don’t necessarily have to make a habit of getting more than one psychic reading, do you?

What if you were out to prove the psychic as a charlatan?

That was a drag.

Yes, and what if you just wanted to really prove that it was your Aunt Jackie who had come through the veil to talk to you?

Look, people can be their own psychic readers. That’s one of the books I’m going to publish one of these days. Besides, I just like talking to you like we do. You’re a comfort to me. I would be bereft if I couldn’t talk to you anymore.

What makes you think I’m going to up and disappear?

I know. It sounds childish.

It’s not childish at all. Lots of people are afraid of something. You wouldn’t be human if you weren’t afraid of something.

Okay, so let’s wrap this up. I think we can sell our stuff. I think we need the courage to just keep trying with whatever it is we are doing. I think we need to know that fabulous results aren’t always going to be there every time we want them to be. If it is writing, painting, singing, or composing, whatever it is that we each choose to do, we just need to not listen to anybody who thinks it is a bad idea. We need all the encouragement we can get. We need to just step off the deep end.
