Self-love
What it is and why we need it
Love yourself without
Looking in the mirror
Snapping a selfie
Begging to be petted
Begging to be seen
Begging like a suppliant for a smile.
Love yourself with pride
Love the quiet sound your breathing makes
Love the widening of your eyes at daybreak
And the shushing of your soul at night.
Love into action what you imagine
Love even as you hurl yourself body first into despair.
Love others as yourself, as if your life depended on it.
As if you are tethered to the other
Both of you hanging on for dear life
Both of you on the precipice of indifference.
Should you notice you’re of a paler hue,
Should you want to look away in fear, hate, disgust
Look into the fire and never avert your stare,
For if you love yourself, you will see a part of you standing there.
