Self Help
The secret to success can be found… somewhere you’ll never get to go.
Gurus
They promise self-help but only print books to tell you success is not about looks. They dangle their carrots while hiding their sticks until time to beat you because you’re not “fixed”.
They all swear it works, but charge you to learn the secrets of life for which you’re concerned. They’re just like the preachers who promise it all, selling out religion to avoid their own fall.
They have their conventions, seek your applause while pocketing money in the name of good cause. They promise adventure they only get while you’re stuck home reading, drowning in debt.
They promise nirvana, to show you the way to love and success on your worst days. They promise you secrets, but hold something back, and should you dare call it, their hordes will attack.
They’ll lead you up mountains where they’ve never walked while promising sunshine, and other such talk. They promise a future you can only dream while struggling to live the American Dream.
They answer in riddles, the questions you ask, and if you question them, they’ll question your past. They’ll say you’re not worthy, you don’t know the way, call you a critic, and wish you good day.
And though they are many they hide from the dark, promise you plenty, claim they are the spark, but all those who know them are not free to say, the joy they promise will last but a day.
Yes, they know the secrets to get all your loot, keep you all smiling while they give you the boot. And when all is over they welcome you back to give them your money to just hold you back.
And the band plays on…
