Seize Today… and Tomorrow… and Tomorrow…

“Unless you seize the day, it flees.” — Seneca

Many a person has attempted to seize the day.

To make the most of each day, each moment.

And yet, so often, the day, so easily, slips away.

Seizing the day is easier said than done. But if you fail to seize it, it shall easily flee away.

A day isn’t made to sit around. To wait until you’re ready. It’s made to be taken hold of. And those who take hold of it will find it waiting to be seized again tomorrow. And tomorrow. And tomorrow.

And if a day does slip away, well, you’re in luck, because tomorrow is a new day to be taken hold of.

As long as we have today and tomorrow, we have days for us to embrace.

Behind the Blog

I’m sitting in an airport in Las Vegas, just having completed my time at the NBA’s Summer League.

I’m on my way to visit some friends in Hawaii.

It seemed like a good time to get this week’s blog written.

I had recently finished reading a book by Seneca, On the Shortness of Life.

And one of the quotes I wrote down was,

Unless you seize the day, it flees. — Seneca

I had tucked it away in my phone for when I needed to write. I had already written the blog, around the central them of seizing, seize, seize.

But also, I think there are different ways to seize a day. Sometimes a day of rest might be what is needed to seize the day. Or sometimes… maybe you just fall short and have a bad day, and that’s okay too. Because Lord-willing, there is a tomorrow.

So I interspersed a dash of lightness and hope amongst the seizing because well, I don’t ever want anyone to read something I’ve written and feel like they’re a failure or haven’t lived up to who they can be.

I think there is always a balance between pushing ourselves, forgiving ourselves, and simply just… being.
