This compelling invitation unfolded as I became part of the initiative at my local church years ago, known as Operation Christmas Child. Its profound mission is to tangibly spread God’s love to children worldwide. Participants were encouraged to select a child’s gender and age range, then fill a shoebox — or as many as they felt inspired to give — with items they deemed essential for the child on Christmas. From toys and hygiene products to candies and clothing, the aim was to offer heartfelt support for a noble cause during the holiday season. I shared what I was doing with my colleagues at work and they generously participated too. That particular year, the shoeboxes embarked on a journey to a village in Africa.
The video below supported a school with deaf children.

The stark contrast between affluent lifestyles in the West and the impoverished conditions in many other countries is undeniable. In some places, even accessing the most fundamental necessity like water is considered a privilege.
Understanding what it’s like being you extends beyond mere curiosity; it’s an earnest attempt to walk alongside you in your journey, to comprehend the intricacies that shape your reality. Just as the beautiful energy behind the shoe boxes that embodies love, compassion, and empathy, this inquiry seeks to foster a similar warmth of understanding and acceptance. It’s an invitation to share your joys, struggles, and unique narrative, enveloped in an atmosphere of goodwill and genuine connection. Much like the joy of giving during the holiday season, this question seeks to give the gift of listening and acknowledging, creating a space where your experiences are honored and embraced with empathy and kindness.
This coming holiday season, may we not get consumed by rampant commercialism, neglecting compassion and empathy — integral aspects that stem from love, our most essential attribute. A listening ear and an understanding heart are two of the most invaluable gifts we can give.
Grateful for understanding, compassion, and big hearts.
