Improve Your Happiness Stop Looking For Your Purpose Do This Instead

Photo by Michael Fenton on Unsplash

For years, I was envious of people who could stand up and declare they had a life’s purpose.

I desperately wanted one. I wanted to experience that smug sense of satisfaction that they all seemed to possess. How I ached to feel the certainty that I was fulfilling my purpose on earth.

Yep! it’s my life’s purpose!

I longed to say those words. I felt if I couldn’t say them, my life was somehow inferior. I tried for years to find my purpose. That elusive something that would make me feel so super contented and let me wear that same smug self- satisfied smile.

Now I’m older and I have the benefit of hindsight and when I look back, I can see that for some people, their life’s purpose didn’t last the distance.

If I wanted to gloat about it, (which secretly I do even though it’s not a very attractive trait). I could even say that for some, it was just a passing fad. Their purpose lasted a couple of years, if that.

I’ve had decades to observe people who proudly proclaimed they had a life’s purpose. Turns out most of it was complete bullshit.

3 Common Traits

It seems to me that people with a “purpose” have at least 3 things in common.

  1. They have an initial liking of a subject.
  2. They have curiosity and want to know more about the subject.
  3. They make a decision to continue learning and studying the same subject.

Some people are drawn to a subject right from the get-go and they will flat out say, this is why I am here, this is what I want to do. Whilst others don’t. Their purpose grows gradually, as they gain more confidence and knowledge in the subject.

People who have a life’s purpose love what they do.

Getting A Life’s Purpose

If you want a life’s purpose, it seems it’s easy to get one.

To start with, all you have to do is follow these steps.

  1. Like something
  2. Get curious and make a commitment to live and breathe it for the foreseeable future.
  3. Proclaim it to the world. Make sure you put a smile on your face and talk enthusiastically about it to anyone who will listen and even to thouse who won’t.

The Secret Antidote To Finding Your Life’s Purpose

If you want to find the secret antidote to finding your life’s purpose, then look no further.

I’d like to be able to give you some complicated formula and 999 steps to follow, but I can’t. I can give you 3 steps. For some of you, they will be the hardest steps in the world to master.

Let’s get straight to it.

Step 1. Forgiveness

Learn how to forgive yourself for not being who you wanted yourself to be.

Step 2. Acceptance

Learn how to accept yourself for who you are right now and start a new you now.

Step 3. Love

Learn how to love yourself.

When you can accept and love yourself, not in a big ego, narcissistic way. Not the arrogant, I am the best way. But in a genuine, caring way. A way that expresses curiosity about what you can do, who you can be. You won’t need a “life’s purpose.”

You will be able to give thanks to your incredible mind and amazing body. You will start to love all the wonderful things you can do with your body, such as smell, touch, feel, move & have sex.

When you can connect your heart and mind in gratitude, you won’t need to look for a purpose because you will understand this: When you look for a life’s purpose, what you are really saying to yourself is; I am not enough as I am. I need a purpose to complete me.

In Conclusion

If you can master self-love and gratitude, you will experience an exponential growth in happiness.

How do I know this?

Science.

Science tells us that when you are in love, your brain gets flooded with the chemical dopamine. It’s your body’s natural happy drug. All you have to do is remember this:

You Are Enough & You Have Everything You Need Right Here Right Now.

Your only purpose is to be the best you possibly can with everything you have been given.
