A Fairy Tale Poem

She’s in the sea, she’s on the land she’s all over the place and never pleased with anything!

Why did we indulge her for so long her voice? Her hair? Her seashell top?

I get wanting a different life, sister, believe me, I do. I get thinking the grass or the foam or sand

is better in the place where you aren’t — I get wanting to get the man of your dreams and what not, sure, sure

but it would seem in the original tale at least that all of this was a bust a giant fail, epic as they say — no man, no legs, no life —

just dead, a sacrifice for ambition and longing, a pinup girl for needless feminine suffering.

The things we do for men, a man, this man, that man, the man voices sacrificed, bodies cut apart, transformed into sea foam —

floating up to heaven, getting that big ‘nice job but….’ from God, while Prince Charming marries this one or that one -

are women so interchangeable, so insignificant?
