CREATIVE REFRESHMENT

‘Sea Fever’ by John Masefield

Classic, salty goodness!

Painting by Susan Alison

‘Sea Fever’ by John Masefield*

I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by; And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking, And a grey mist on the sea’s face, and a grey dawn breaking.

I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied; And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying, And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.

I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life, To the gull’s way and the whale’s way where the wind’s like a whetted knife; And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover, And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over.

This is my favourite poem. I love the rhythm of it, the words used, the lilt of those words, and, of course, the atmosphere it evokes is exactly that of living on the ever-moving, ever-changing ocean, buffeted by fresh, salty air, appreciating one of the marvels of the natural world.

It’s about wanderlust, and living life to the full even when it might be difficult. Most of all, it’s about a love of the sea only gained through having experienced it in all its moods, having wrestled with it, and having gained that sea-harmony unique to it.

It also brings to mind one of my favourite people of all time. This means that I can’t always read it without getting a straining throat and stinging eyes. It’s still worth it, though.

My own creativity is always refreshed by reading the creative works of others — especially some of the classic poems, knowing they were written in a different world at a different time, with a different mindset.

More wonderful, classic poetry of an autumnal nature.
