Summary

Scrittura provides submission guidelines for writers interested in contributing to their publication, emphasizing original human writing, quality, and adherence to specific formatting and content standards.

Abstract

Scrittura, a writing publication, has updated its submission guidelines for January 2024. Writers are invited to submit their work by emailing editors with their Medium profile and two samples of published work. The publication does not accept AI-generated content and is selective due to an increase in AI-written submissions. The content should be authentic human experience, and while hard topics are welcomed, hate speech is not tolerated. Submissions must be well-written and proofread, with a minimum of 150 words, and include proper photo credits. Proper formatting includes single-spacing for poetry and prose-poetry, double spacing between stanzas or paragraphs, and the use of standard English. Writers must tag their stories with 'Scrittura' and the appropriate genre, and if responding to a prompt, credit the prompt's author. The editorial team aims to respond within 48 hours and publishes on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

Opinions

  • The editorial team values authenticity and integrity in writing, explicitly rejecting AI-generated content.
  • They encourage creativity and personal storytelling while adhering to Medium's rules and guidelines.
  • Quality writing is subjective but essential; the editors reserve the right to pass on pieces that do not meet their standards.
  • The publication is inclusive of spiritual content but remains neutral regarding religious promotion.
  • The editors are committed to a thorough vetting process and expect writers to be patient, given the potential two-week waiting period for acceptance.
  • They emphasize the importance of proper credit for photographs and compliance with formatting standards.
  • The editorial team is dedicated to providing feedback and expects writers to engage with the editing process if their piece requires revisions.

Write With Us

If you want to become a writer here, please email any editor below with a link to your Medium profile and two links to samples of your published work. If you just comment on this post, we may not see it. Please reach out in the way we request. Please be patient. Due to the increased work written by artificial intelligence, we are taking time to vet our writers. It may take up to two weeks to be accepted as a writer.

Notes on Content

  • We do publish pieces about hard topics.
  • We do not tolerate hate in any of its ugly forms. The editor’s opinion is final.
  • We do publish spiritual work, but we do not publish work intended to promote a particular religion.
  • We do NOT publish work generated by artificial intelligence. Please write with integrity.
  • We publish stories from living human beings: flesh, blood, heart, mind, memory, backstory, regret, hope, shame, vulnerability, love, anxiety, and other forms of human experience.
  • Be creative, tell your story, and comply with Medium rules and guidelines.
  • We are looking for quality writing. Understanding that this is subjective, bring your best work to Scrittura. We may pass on your piece, but this isn’t personal!

Notes on Formatting and Proofreading

  • Poetry and prose-poetry on Medium read best single-spaced. Please use double spacing between stanzas or paragraphs.
  • We don’t publish pieces less than 150 words, generally.
  • For other prose, please use the standards of English (regional English spellings are fine).
  • All photos must credit the photographer and the source if the author doesn’t own it.
  • We will fix minor typos and leave a private note. Issues with grammar or structure will be returned for revision. Please read your work out loud to yourself before submitting it.
  • Please add a subtitle that is in the subtitle case. This should either extend your title and/or indicate the genre of your piece. If you do not indicate the genre in the subtitle, you need a KICKER. See the next point.
  • Kickers are the little headers that go on top of the title. This can be anything; it serves an informative purpose. It is not required in Scrittura, unless you don’t indicate the genre of your work in the subtitle.
  • Please use an image at the top of the piece. It can be above or below the Title/Subtitle.
  • Italicize Scrittura in the text of a piece.

Tagging

Each story must be tagged with the topic Scrittura and the appropriate genre: Poetry, Prose, or Prose Poem so that it will populate our tagged pages. Please use the tag/topic Prompt for any pieces responding to our prompts. Be sure to mention the prompt's author and link back to the original prompt at the bottom of your work. Then, more people will know about it, and inspiration will spread!

Please be patient.

If your piece needs work to be ready for publication, an editor will leave you a private message. Please check and respond. Our goal is to publish or respond within 48 hours of submission. We publish on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. If your piece is returned, you will always receive a reason why in a private message. Please refrain from inquiring when your work will be published once submitted.

Happy writing and reading!
