Scratch Your Own Itch Is the Best Business Advice
A simple way to generate great business ideas

Most businesses will fail.
That’s the sad truth of it. 20% of business will end up broke after their first year. And after 10 years, 70% of businesses will fail.
But you don’t wanna be one of those.
You wanna be unique. You wanna be part of the 30% of people who are making money from their side hustle.
Well, guess what.
Me too.
So how can you and I have the best possible chance of creating a successful business? Well, at its core, having a solid business idea helps.
It won’t matter how good your guru and marketing skills are if your business idea sucks.
But coming up with ideas is a tough process. I’ve spent countless hours racking my brain and coming up with nothing.
So how did I fix it? I got on my phone and scrolled through Instagram for inspiration. Duh.
After some mindless tapping, I come across a 15-second clip by Gary V. And just as I’m about to swipe, his title captures my attention.
HOW TO GET BUSINESS IDEAS
I watch Gary’s video and afterwards, I close my eyes and start floating in the air because of his magical advice.
Jokes aside, his advice was so helpful because it was realistic and straightforward. It went like this.
- Find out what you want (because it’s probably what a lot of other people want)
- Check the market’s products and see if you could make them better.
- Build your product as best as you can and market it
- If it sells, then great. You got some dough and made the world a better place. (If not, that’s ok just try again)
He calls this scratching your own itch. Which I think is a great analogy. You scratch your back to help other people scratch their backs better.
This method has helped me come up with 5 different side hustle ideas. Ones that are solid and might actually work. I’ll be spending the summer working on them, so we’ll see how it goes.
Oh, And One More Thing
I value my readers so much which is why I’ll always be honest with them. So it’s out of love that I say that you’ll probably fail. And that’s ok. It’s cheesy I know but I myself am hoping to fail at least twice before I turn 25.
And I say this because you learn a lot more from failure than from success. So don’t take this the wrong way, but I hope you fail at least once and learn from it.
I don’t trust anyone who hasn’t failed big at least once. — Anonymous
So remember, scratch your own itch, build your business, make some moolah and the world a better place. Happy itching.
(P.S. My goal in writing on Medium is to give as much value as I can. To do that, I would love to get feedback from those I value most. That’s you! So don’t be afraid to leave a comment :)
