Scoring in Business: My Take on Product Marketing 🌟

Over the past three years, I’ve had the privilege of serving in various product marketing roles. Although my official title was ‘Product Marketer,’ the responsibilities in each position differed significantly. In navigating this role, I often compare it to sports, particularly volleyball 🏐.

As a former player, here’s an analogy I find helpful: In volleyball, PMMs are like setters. As a setter, you need to understand your team’s strengths 💪, decide who to set up for a spike 🏐, and be capable of both deciphering the opposing team’s strategies 🤔 and spotting opportunities for advantage.

Similarly, in my role as a PMM, I frequently find myself developing Go-To-Market (GTM) strategies 📈 (setting up the play), conducting competitive research 🔍 (understanding opponents’ strengths and weaknesses), drafting Marketing Positioning Frameworks (MPFs) 📝 (articulating my team’s strengths), and communicating cross-functionally with stakeholders to ensure alignment 🤝 (being aware of your teammates’ abilities and how to set them up for success.

Product marketing can be challenging, but it’s also incredibly rewarding and energizing ⚡, offering the chance to impact many areas of the business. If you’re comfortable with ambiguity, product marketing might be the perfect fit for you 🎯. I’ll conclude by noting that the scope of product marketing can vary based on your company’s size, industry, and maturity. Regardless, it’s always full of surprises 🎉.

I’m curious to hear from my fellow product marketers (and those aspiring to be): What drew you to this role? 💭👀
