Summary

The author shares three unconventional dreams and aspirations as a Medium writer, reflecting on the platform's potential for change and growth.

Abstract

The author reflects on three ambitious dreams they had as a Medium writer during a period when they were less consistent with their writing. The first dream involves being paid to write for other Medium writers, an idea the author considers akin to a business venture but ultimately decides against for the sake of personal branding. The second dream is for Medium to offer a fixed payment for every article published, regardless of engagement, to encourage more contributions from a diverse range of writers. The third dream is for Medium to facilitate endorsement deals for writers, similar to influencer partnerships on social media platforms, leveraging the unique expertise and popularity of Medium authors. The article concludes with a thank you to the readers and an invitation to subscribe for future articles.

Opinions

  • The author initially viewed writing on Medium as a side activity to their construction job, leading to the first dream of writing for other writers for compensation.
  • Despite considering the idea of writing for others as potentially lazy or mercenary, the author frames it as a strategic business decision but chooses to prioritize personal visibility and brand development.
  • The author criticizes Medium's current earnings model, suggesting it favors established writers and those with strong community engagement, proposing a fixed payment per article to democratize earnings.
  • There is a concern that a flat payment system might reward substandard writing, but the author believes it would still motivate more frequent contributions from a broader range of writers.
  • The author sees potential for Medium writers to gain recognition beyond the platform, envisioning a system where writers can secure endorsement deals similar to social media influencers.
  • The author expresses a desire for Medium to become a more inclusive platform that acknowledges and compensates writers for their unique talents and contributions.

Scoop In on Three of My Wildest Medium Dreams

Two of them are specifically for you.

The world is generally filled with what-ifs, and should-haves but most especially the what-ifs.

What if I this what if I that.

Well, I am one of those people that are in the clan of the what-ifs.

A few months back, when I was not too consistent with writing, I didn’t really give writing a decent thought, other than that it is just what I love to do.

I always had three thoughts that I felt were crazy enough to have as a Medium writer.

Some of them may appear to you to be the thoughts of a lazy person, and I agree — I was working my 8–6 construction job at the time, 6 days a week for nearly 50 hours.

Don’t blame me.

Some may also feel rather unthinkable and impossible to you — Well, you might still be battling with the abilities to dream big enough. But I am way past that.

Without further ado, here are my three wildest Medium dreams.

I wish I could…

This wild dream was very eminent when I haven’t taken Medium or writing in general very seriously.

Apart from that, I really didn’t have the time to pull out so much content, as I was always in my construction job fishing out issues in blueprints and structural drawings, which I was good at.

After months of imagining how much success I might or might not have had on Medium in my first full year of literary writing as if I was forced to write.

I thought to myself, “What if I could write for another Medium writer, and just get paid for it?”

After all, at that time, most of my articles don’t even make the pay cut.

So why not just write for a top writer who is busy with something else or another platform and just get a reasonable amount from them instead.

I know!

I sound lazy, but I have since realized that it is just a business idea, and there is nothing bad in monetizing your skill, but I also need the publicity and online presence for myself. So no but, thank you no, I ain’t finna do that.

Don’t be surprised if you have writers who are already making a pile of cash from writing for other writers here on Medium while you consistently scream that the algorithm doesn’t favor you.

I wish I could…

This is a bit off. It’s more like an improvement to the website.

Let’s be dead serious now.

The website only pays a ton to the very present writers, and practically, the writers who have made a whole lot even from other platforms.

It also represents that your earnings are only as good as the number of engagements and relationships you have with the community.

Although some writers are way past that.

All they do is turn up twice or once a day, and each article ends up making nothing short of $30–$50.

Okay enough!

What I am getting at is that I wish I could get a stipulated amount from Medium every time I hit publish.

I mean, just hit publish and get $3 on every article, regardless of views or engagements.

Trust me! That will be enough reason for more members to contribute more often to the website.

But then, what about writers whose writing is not a standard fit. A writer whose writing doesn’t confer with quality in terms of;

1. Formatting.

2. Editing.

3. Seo.

4. Writing ability.

5. Information.

I don’t know if they deserve it. But all I know is that it is one of my wildest dreams on Medium.

I wish Medium…

Hmmm. Yes!

This one is a little bit intentional on the word Medium.

I know once I type the M-word on my Dell Chrome search bar, I am headed for an entirety of a different world.

Medium is not like Instagram, Facebook, or any of the Meta websites, nor is it like the blue new major(LinkedIn), but I do wish that writers could get more appreciation for their efforts.

A platform like Medium should be open to huge external publications and great copy or digital marketing companies that might require the expertise or popularity of any Medium writer for their brand.

Why can’t writers get endorsement deals?

Well, maybe because half the folks here are only popular here alone and nowhere else.

It is one of my wildest dreams; to somehow get an endorsement deal from Medium.

It’s cold crazy. But I might as well be the first writer to do it. You would be surprised.

Thank you so much for reading my article today. My gratitude towards you knows no bound. I would be publishing another article very soon.
