Scary Urban Legends You Didn’t Realize Are Based On Real Stories

Some creepy tales are based on real events, like Charlie No Face, the Green Man.

People have always enjoyed telling one another scary stories and horrific folklore to scare and entertain one another.

Though some of these stories are just made up for entertainment, did you know that certain urban legends are based on genuine events? I’ll share a few of these spooky tales with you today, and we’ll see if they’re real or simply the stuff of fiction.

Creepy Urban Legends

The Green Man, also known as Charlie No Face, is the subject of a well-known urban legend. According to the tale, he was a laborer who was disfigured in an accident involving acid or electricity.

The fact is that Raymond Robinson, better known as Charlie No Face, was a real person before he became a fictional character. He survived an electrical accident in 1919 and lived a quiet life, avoiding the public eye due to his injuries.

Another terrifying story involves a family with a madman living in their attic. The family begins to experience unusual occurrences as time passes. Finally, when they are sleeping, the crazy assaults them. The story here is based on the 1922 German murders of the Gruber family, who were mercilessly murdered by a person who remains unknown.

There is also a spooky story of Polybius, a video game that featured guys in black gathering data from addicted players. But what’s this?

Polybius never existed. Tempest was a game that some said made them uneasy, and the FBI raids on arcades suspected of being illegal gambling dens may have given rise to the men in black rumors.

Horrific Cases

Some practices, such as night doctors kidnapping individuals for experimentation, came from African-American culture.

Even if night doctors don’t exist, evil individuals have harmed others by posing as ghosts in the past. These tales are based on horrible historical incidents that happened.

According to the Hook Man folklore, a couple having an intimate moment in a car is startled by scratching noises. This story may have been influenced by actual killings in Texarkana in 1946. Experts think the real-life crime affected the folklore, even though the murderer lacked a hook for a hand. A creepy rumor of a cruel child haunts his old house as a dog-human ghost near Whitman, Arkansas.

Spooky Mysteries

Bloody Mary is a spooky spirit you may conjure in front of a mirror, and many of us have heard of her. But don't worry the Bloody Mary is a myth. However, because of how our brains function, you could see odd things if you look at yourself in the mirror for a long period.

The Alice Killings, a spooky murder mystery involving “Alice” and playing cards, is a Japanese urban legend. Even if the story isn’t factual, a true Spanish case involving a murderer who left playing cards at crime scenes may have had an impact.

A Body in the water tank?

What about the scary story about the new house with black water because there was a body in the tank? The story’s genesis is unclear, but it makes us think of a true incident in Los Angeles where a woman’s body was discovered in a hotel’s water tank.

So there you have it! Some urban legends are real, but others are pure imagination. Whether real or not, these stories continue to give us goosebumps and remind us that the line between fact and fiction can be blurry.
