Scala Naturae
.
A time when the Earth was a young blazing star and life a reality due. A hungry prokaryote engulfed a cell forever changing the trajectory of the planet. The cell evolved into mitochondria blending into one organism within its host. Cambrian Explosion later set the stage, “a primitive soup” from which life arose. Fungi colonized the land beginning a symbiotic relationship with early plants. Ability to survive extreme temperatures, Sphagnum moss monopolized the peat. Arthropods, flaunting an exoskeleton, feasted on fern leaves as they grew tall. Amphibians sprouted limbs, climbed out of the sea. Reptiles bathed embryos in amniotic juice. With every piece locked in its place, evolutionary traits accumulated with scrupulous detail. Nature said it’s time. Species came and left. From Tiktallik to Dimetrodon. They all paved the way so the next descendant could thrive. A specialized brain, acute senses, In-depth perception, Broca’s area, a fecund imagination, and a sense of wonder. This will be my masterpiece. ****************************************
Curious about his place on the rung of the ladder, Darwin traveled the world on the Beagle. Found the elixir at Galapagos Islands. Aristotle and Carolus Linnaeus, among others, Spent their lives mesmerized by “scala naturae.” Somewhere along the way, the new species forgot its reason. Driven by the perverse lust to dominate, turned to its maker and sought a fight. Killed every occupant in its sight. A struggle for power, cognitive dissonance at an all-time high. The disdain of any other life but itself now faces the consequences of own malediction, A decaying, decadent race, stuck in a hypnagogic state, It ignored all the prescient warnings. They are calling it the sixth mass extinction. We were not an evolutionary mishap. We were a long-term project meticulously curated over a billion years. We are what happens when an AI movie goes tragically wrong.
