Summary

The article discusses the realistic portrayal of side hustles, suggesting that it may be more encouraging and honest to say a side hustle "might" pay well rather than claiming it definitely will.

Abstract

The content reflects on the trend of side hustles and how they are presented in stories, particularly on platforms like Medium and NewsBreak. It emphasizes that while many people share their experiences and methods for earning extra income, only a small percentage actually achieve significant earnings. The article suggests that readers might find it more believable and motivating when writers discuss the potential rather than guaranteed financial success of side hustles. It also touches on the enjoyment and personal fulfillment that can come from these endeavors, even if they don't lead to substantial financial returns.

Opinions

  • It is more encouraging and honest to discuss the potential earnings of a side hustle rather than asserting that high monthly incomes are a certainty.
  • The term "side hustle" has become popular, replacing what was once referred to as part-time jobs or various forms of online work.
  • While platforms like Medium and NewsBreak have made it easier for writers to earn money, only a tiny fraction of writers achieve significant side income.
  • Claims of easily earning large sums, such as $10,000, from side hustles are met with skepticism and seen as potentially misleading.
  • The article suggests a cautious approach to stories of side hustle success, acknowledging that while some are true, others may be exaggerated or based on wishful thinking.
  • Many writers on Medium may not prioritize earnings but still hope to make some money from their writing.

Saying Side Hustles “Might” Pay May Be More Encouraging

Than saying they have actually made you rich

Computers are important for many side hustles

If a person writes a story about how a side hustle will or may pay him $5,000 a month (eventually if he is lucky), that could be more encouraging and honest than saying that $5,000 IS being earned each month (unless it is true).

There are so many stories on Medium about side hustles. They used to be called part-time jobs or they were often multi-level marketing or network marketing. Then it was online work such as affiliate marketing or writing. Freelance writing has been around for decades with writers trying to push their work. Now it is regularly being called a side hustle.

With the advent of such platforms as Medium and NewsBreak, it is a little easier for people to earn a “little” money through writing. It is not a sure thing, and very few can make it pay as an effective and lucrative side hustle. People are enjoying the ability to write and get work published even if it doesn’t pay the bills. If only 8% of 40,000 or so writers are earning at least $100 a month, that could not be considered as big earnings or returns.

Saying something might or will pay could be believable. Saying that anyone could earn $10,000 on a side hustle and that it is easy may sound a little far fetched.

There are numerous stories about side hustles because nearly everyone wants to earn some extra income. People are sharing various ways to earn money. Some say they are doing it, but many are just providing ideas which might or might not work. If you enjoy the work, it could be worth the effort.

Although some of those stories about success and earning lots of money are likely to be true, it is hard to tell if the writers are being honest or if it is wishful thinking. We can read and learn from what is presented. They can give us encouragement.

Many writers on Medium may claim that they don’t care about the money, but most would like to have earnings from their writing. They may not need a lot of money so they are able to keep writing without success, but they still hope to earn some money.
