This January I made a quick 5 day visit to Sarajevo, Bosnia. I’ve had it on my destination list for a while, and while I didn’t end up in the city during the season I would’ve originally prefered, I still managed to enjoy it in all its frozen wintery glory.
I’ll definitely return in the summer/warmer months ( hopefully soon).
One thing I found incredibly interesting, but also hard to nail down, was this mixed feeling of cultural trauma and also rebirth that permeated the city. Rebirth is also probably the wrong word to use, because you could argue that the spirit of Sarajevo has persisted through the centuries no matter the challenges.
The war from the 90s has left its mark, and there is still a sizeable population (on both sides of the conflict) that seems unwilling or unable to move on. I can’t judge these feelings, as they’re understably incredibly complex and context specific. However, that feeling of “persistence” in spite of struggle, and the willingness of the people groups to still look toward hope and a brighter future, it lingers. This feeling is especially obvious in the youth.
This, however, is a travel blog (not a post-war cultural analysis). My degree background (and the 6 years I spent studying the Bosnian conflicts) do qualify me to speak on this a bit more than the average blogger, but for today I will just keep this as apolitical as possible and stick to the photos.
Visiting Sarajevo, Bosnia in the winter is an experience that blends history, resilience, and the enchantment of the season. As you wander through the city’s streets, a poignant reminder of its tumultuous past reveals itself in the form of damaged buildings, remnants of the Bosnian War that ravaged the city in the 1990s. These scars, rather than casting a shadow of despair, offer a powerful testament to the indomitable spirit of the people.
In winter, as a gentle blanket of snow covers the city, Sarajevo exudes a captivating atmosphere. The chilly air is filled with the aroma of roasted chestnuts and warm beverages from cozy cafes that line the streets. The sight of locals huddled together, engaged in animated conversations, adds a sense of community and togetherness to the ambience.
Sarajevo’s vibrant cultural scene flourishes even in the winter months. The National Museum, Gazi Husrev-bey Mosque, and the Latin Bridge, where the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand took place, beckon history enthusiasts. The city’s museums and galleries showcase captivating exhibitions that pay homage to both its rich heritage and its contemporary artistry.
Moreover, Sarajevo’s winter landscape provides ample opportunities for outdoor activities. The nearby mountains offer skiing and snowboarding adventures, while the scenic trails invite you to explore the beauty of nature and enjoy peaceful moments amidst the serenity of the snow-covered landscapes. The famous and abandoned olympic bobsled track is also a destination for street-art enthusiasts (even in the snow).
The city stands as a testament to the strength of the human spirit, a place where the scars of the past become symbols of determination, reminding us that hope can emerge even from the darkest of times.
Visiting Sarajevo in the winter is an experience that not only allows you to immerse yourself in the city’s rich history and cultural tapestry, but also offers a profound reflection on the capacity of human resilience and the enduring power of hope. The winter canvas shows a different side, but a beautiful side all the same.
I am proividing the above context statement for any reader who may be unaware of why so many of my photos may appear dreary, include bullet scarred buildings, or otherwise project the feeling of gloom.
While the damaged buildings serve as reminders of a painful past, they also symbolize hope. Sarajevo’s inhabitants have chosen not to let the scars define their city, but rather to rebuild and transform it into a beacon of resilience and unity. New structures harmoniously blend with the old, creating a tapestry that narrates the city’s journey towards healing and progress.
This gloomy feeling was in part due to the grey winter clouds overhead, but the obvious gloom betrays the in person feeling of resliance you’ll find in the people on the street, the strangers who smile at you and offer any advice you could ever need. The people in Sarajevo were kind and, for the most part, happy and hopeful. The gloomier nature of these photos should not be consumed without that context in mind.
