Samsara
One Cruel Joke
Samsara is a sick joke that Emptiness is playing on itself
The expression “Didn’t know the gun was loaded,” springs to mind. Look around at the results — I don’t think this is what Emptiness actually had in mind. Not that it had a mind to have it in.
Clever though. Impossibly clever.
All strands of Buddhism seem to agree that Samsara is an illusion; an illusion founded on our basic ignorance — an illusion also created by, and kept in place by the trillion, trillion, trillion, trillion, trillion et cetera shards of little emptinesses that constitute all living things.
My question, though, is why on earth would Emptiness, quite content and peaceful before the outset of things (from what I understand) rock the pure stillness boat so egregiously, and for such a duration (i.e., still rocking it)?
Perhaps we meant this Samsara thing for just a short spell; sort of break the monotony of nothingness for a while (inventing Time in the process, of course). If so, we must admit, we were a lot better at it that we would ever have thought, for it’s still here, Samsara in all its glory and cruel and gory underbellies.
I take it that the initial problem was how to make things, even the tiniest thing, persist. After all, you (the Emptiness) knew darn well that you were imagining (i.e., creating) that little dot of light here, and, of course, the moment you ceased “putting it there” it vanished. There was no going on without your putting it there and perceiving it.
So, how come things seem to persist just fine without your help or attention these days? And so many things. So many, many things.
So many molecules, so many atoms, so many sub-atomic particles, so many stars, so many galaxies: each and every thing here and dashing about there without our knowing or doing. Or, perhaps better but: with our unknowing doing.
For that’s what ignorance is all about, isn’t it?
