Safe Ways to Use ChatGPT to Study Better (No Cheating)

I don’t think I need to introduce ChatGPT; in my opinion, it is a search engine with some generalization ability. Let’s dive in on how to use it to improve our work. As a student, I asked ChatGPT two questions frequently this month, which greatly helped.
- Please list the most cited papers on the … topic
- Please make this paragraph more academic
Therefore, I’d like to reflect on how to use ChatGPT to increase study efficiency. Here are four ways I used in the last three months. It’s worth noting that copying the question and asking ChatGPT to write the complete essay is dangerous since the answer is not 100% correct, its writing style differs from yours, and your classmates might get a similar answer. For research students, you will find the answers to niche questions are wrong. And you can’t check the sources too.
- Brainstorming or inspirations
- Summarising articles
- Explaining concepts
- Revising or improving texts
1. Brainstorming or inspiration
We used to google related questions and organize the ideas by ourselves. But now ChatGPT can help us summarize those ideas, saving us time scrolling through the search results. You could ask it:
Give me some ideas on … with the sources

2. Summarising articles
You might wonder how to upload a PDF file to ChatGPT. Just type “summarize this” and paste a URL. Amazing, right?

3. Explaining concepts
This one is easy, simply ask it
(1) What is …
(2) Give me an example of it
(3) Best resources to learn this concept
4. Revising or improving texts
As mentioned above, I ask it to make my writing more academic. I use plain English since it is not my first language, and academic writing is always a nightmare. But I will prove reading very carefully since ChatGPT tends to add sentences that are not coherent with the rest of my article. Common instructions are these:
(1) Please make it more academic
(2) Please improve this paragraph
(3) Please correct grammar errors
I will learn more about how to use ChatGPT. It seems getting to know those AI tools could improve our work efficiency dramatically.
