Ryan Brown’s 10 Most Anticipated Films of 2024
Here we go, ladies and gentlemen; we now dive right into 2024’s cinematic offerings. The return of the X-Men, Paul Atreides’ final battle with the Harkonnens, brand new emotions, a new titan threat that Godzilla and Kong must face, and so many more find themselves eagerly awaiting to reach the silver screen. Despite last year’s strikes pushing a few films back, 2024 still has a large slate of big movies awaiting release. So what are the ones that I’m most excited for? Let’s get straight to it, shall we?
Real quick honorable mentions:
- Kung Fu Panda 4
- Maxxxine
- Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
- Saw 11
- Alien: Romulus
- Ballerina
- Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
- Venom 3
- Joker: Folie à Deux
10. Mickey 17, directed by Bong Joon-ho

Even though I haven’t watched it since 2020 Oscar season, Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite is a film that I eagerly can’t wait to revisit. Likewise, his upcoming film Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, Steven Yeun, and Mark Ruffalo, has me genuinely intrigued and curious despite knowing basically nothing about it. All I know is that it’s a sci-fi film and that it’s based on a book. Scheduled for March 29th.
9. Inside Out 2, directed by Kelsey Mann

I love the original Inside Out. One of the most remarkably emotional (no pun intended) films Pixar has ever released. With Elemental climbing its way to box office success last year, it seems as though Pixar is returning to the success it once had. With Inside Out 2, continuing the story of Riley and the emotions that live inside her head, the potential is there for a natural continuation of the story with brand new emotions as Riley goes through the most feared part of adolescence: puberty. Scheduled for June 14th.
8. Drive-Away Dolls, directed by Ethan Coen

I was actually pretty bummed when this movie got pushed back, because my goodness, does this look like a fun ride. Just by watching the trailer, the witty comedic timing looks like it’ll be on-point, with this star-studded cast including Margaret Qualley, Geraldine Viswanathan, Matt Damon, Pedro Pascal, Colman Domingo, and others pining after a briefcase containing some real good stuff. Seems to be a real fun ride! Scheduled for February 23rd.
7. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, directed by Wes Ball

What a wonderful day, indeed! I am ashamed to report that I have never seen the Matt Reeves Planet of the Apes trilogy, though I’ve heard incredible things. With Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, set 300 years after the last film and apparently being the start of a brand new trilogy, it seems like the perfect time to witness what this modern world of apes has to offer. Looks like all kinds of epic, and that mo-cap looks as impressive as ever. Scheduled for May 24th.
6. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, directed by Adam Wingard

Y’all know how much I love Godzilla, and just so you know, I love the MonsterVerse. 4 films and 2 shows since 2014, and it’s popularity has only grown since Godzilla vs. Kong in 2021. Now, our favorite atomic lizard and axe-wielding monkey will join forces to face off against a brand new threat: the leader of a society of giant apes inside Hollow Earth called Skar King. That final shot of a pink-powered Godzilla and a gauntlet-wielding Kong running alongside one another in the trailer basically confirmed to me that this movie has the potential to absolutely rule. Scheduled for April 12th.
5. Megalopolis, directed by Francis Ford Coppola

Everything I have read about Francis Ford Coppola’s $120 million passion project, Megalopolis, points to it releasing at some point this year. When, exactly? I don’t know. All I know is that it has a massive ensemble including the likes of Adam Driver and Aubrey Plaza, is directed by one of cinema’s greatest filmmakers, and apparently uses brand new filmmaking technology. Oh, and it’s supposed to be this epic sci-fi drama. Sign me up.
4. Dune Part 2, directed by Denis Villeneuve

To say that I am incredibly excited for Dune Part 2 would be an understatement. I have been excited for this movie ever since the credits rolled on a giant IMAX screen way back in 2021. The novel is one of my favorites of all time, and I love the fact that Villeneuve has described this second half of the original story as an epic war movie between the Fremen and the Harkonnens. Each trailer for this has given me chills. Seeing this on the biggest screen possible will be an absolute necessity. Scheduled for March 1st.
3. Terrifier 3, directed by Damien Leone

This is the Halloween event of 2024 for me. I adore Terrifier 2 — one of my favorite horror films of all time — so naturally, I find myself giddy as Damien Leone’s Terrifier 3 awaits this October. Not only does the Christmas setting have the potential to differentiate itself stylistically from the other films, but the return of Lauren LaVera’s Sienna — one of the best final girls of the past few years — has me just as excited as the carnage about to erupt when Art the Clown comes home for Christmas. Scheduled for October 25th.
2. Nosferatu, directed by Robert Eggers

I’ve made mention numerous time on how much I love Robert Eggers as a filmmaker, so I won’t dwell on that here. What I will say is that despite this film literally coming out towards the end of this year, the upcoming remake of the 1922 classic, Nosferatu, is something that I am unreasonably excited to watch. The cast, the story of Count Orlok, the potential for the mood and atmosphere to be fear incarnate…oh boy, I can’t wait. Scheduled for December 25th.
1. Deadpool 3, directed by Shawn Levy

There hasn’t been a single trailer for this film, yet it feels like Deadpool 3 is the upcoming blockbuster that nearly everybody is talking about. The behind-the-scenes photos, the windmill of rumors and speculation, Hugh Jackman returning as Wolverine IN THE CLASSIC SUIT, the R-rating, it’s placement in the Multiverse Saga…everything about this film feels like a perfect storm that’ll bring so many people back on board with the MCU (this being the only MCU film of the year has a lot to do with this as well). My most anticipated film of the year by a country mile. Scheduled for July 26th.
