Massive explosion destroys Russian arms depot

A massive explosion, on Tuesday, 12 July 2022, rocked Nova Kakhovka as Ukrainian forces took out a Russian arms depot. TASS, the Russian news agency, reported a market, hospital, and civilian housing were also damaged. Serhiy Khlan, a Ukrainian spokesman, confirmed a few hospitals and residential areas were damaged during the attack.

“Russian invading forces are preparing for street fighting in the occupied city of Kherson, advisor to the head of Kherson regional military administration Serhiy Khlan said,” tweeted The New Voice of Ukraine.

Khlan, when speaking of civilians welcoming Ukrainian forces, references Russian propaganda. Multiple civilians, according to a TASS source, were killed. Major General Artem Nasbulin of the Russian 22nd Army Corps was killed during the attack.

The fog of war can be misleading. Conflicting reports suggest, further to Nasbulin, 52 soldiers killed (per Ukraine), at least seven soldiers and civilians killed (per Russia), and at least sixty soldiers and civilians wounded (per Russia).

Nova Kakhovka, situated in the Kherson Oblast’s Kakhovka Raion region, is home to some of Ukraine’s most iconic monumental architecture. A few of the city’s most important buildings date back to at least the Great Construction Projects of Communism.
