RUSSO-UKRAINIAN WAR

Russo-Ukrainian War: Russia targets Donetsk Oblast

Nine people, as Russia steps up shelling, are killed

Russian forces, stepping up shelling, indiscriminately targets Ukrainian civilians. Pavlo Kyrylenko, Donetsk Oblast’s governor, stated on Tuesday, 3 May 2022 nine people were killed when Russian forces shelled the city.

“Russia kills civilians!,” Pavlo Kyrylenko tweeted. “On May 3rd number of victims of russian army in Donetsk oblast increased by 23 killed, 27 injured. Every russian will pay for his crimes in Ukraine!”

Russian shelling is unsurprisingly escalated on the eve of European Union sanctions. Eastern Ukraine saw the brunt of Russia’s wrath. Russian forces, primarily targeting Black Sea and Sea of Azov port cities, unleashed numerous rockets.

Evacuees seeking to escape Russia’s bombardment, under United Nations and Red Cross auspices, have found routes away from danger every bit as hazardous as their homes.

“The #Donetsk regional governor says #Russia’s troops shelled a chemical plant in in Avdiivka, a city in eastern #Ukraine, killing at least 10 people and injuring 15 more,” tweeted Al Arabiya English.

Avdiivka, located in central Donetsk Oblast, saw ten people killed when Russian projectiles hit a coking plant. The city has been known for the huge Avdiivka Coke and Chemical Plant (AKHZ) since it was founded in 1963.

“‘Pavlo Kyrylenko, head of Donetsk Regional Military Administration, says Russian forces shelled the Avdiivka Coke Plant; at least 10 dead, 15 wounded. “Workers had just finished their shift and were waiting at the bus stop for a bus to take them home from the factory,’ he says,” tweeted Christopher Miller.

Russian forces have been shelling the plant on and off since early March 2022. BBC News, in January 2017, estimated the city’s population ranged from 16,000 to 22,000 Ukrainians. Fighting over Avdiivka, with Russian forces supporting separatists, has been bloody.

Donetsk Oblast, sometimes referenced as Donechchyna, is situated in eastern Ukraine. The oblast, located between Zaporizhzhia to the west and Luhansk to the east, has significant strategic value to Russia. Controlling Luhansk, Donetsk, and Zaporizhzhia would give Russia the access it requires to form a land bridge to Crimea.

The conflict zone, southern Luhansk and eastern Donetsk, has seen fighting since 2014. Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed separatists have been battling each other over the territory.

President Vladimir Putin, despite international recognition not forthcoming, has officially recognised both Donetsk and Luhansk as breakaway “People’s Republics”.
