‘Russkii Mir’ — ‘Russian World’ — New History?
A crazy glasnost-era film spookily foresaw Putin’s twisted historical narrative

It is a bizzare, prescient surrealist film from the Mosfilm studios. There is an excellent contextual analysis in Politico.com (recommended, no affiliation).
Город Зеро — ‘City Zero’, sometimes translated as ‘Zerograd, dates to 1988, the height of freedom-fervour in the dying USSR.
An engineer in charge of the production line of a factory in Moscow goes to a small town to specify a mechanical part needed from a supplier. In this town everybody seems to be crazy (a secretary who works naked, he is mistaken for a rockstar and so on). The engineer witnesses a suicide and is trapped inside the town.
Dystopian twist: The director, Karen Shakhnazarov, is now a highly commended apologist for Putin.
