Rules — (updated — October 2022)

They say you need rules. Why?

They say you need boundaries, which are rules. Why?

They say you need policies which are boundaries and rules. Why?

Let the rules be common sense. Let the boundaries be considerate common sense. Let the policies be practices that work to ensure considerate common sense.

Welcome to “The Howling Owl.”

First and foremost, this publication is about community.

Let’s build a community of writers who share ideas and work.

Let’s celebrate our successes and nurture our growth as writers.

We began in March 2022 — so in the history of things, that’s rather new. But we are learning all the time. And the first six month’s has been amazing, and wonderful, and rewarding. This can be a place for traditional work, and it can be a place for experimental work — as long a respect for the work is paramount.

Practical Stuff

I’m a terrible editor. As an English teacher, I loved correcting papers — it was joyful to help students find the best ways to express themselves. But I’m not a teacher anymore — it’s not my job to correct your work. Pointers, maybe; corrections, no. Please remember this as you submit. Kindly check your work before submission. Please italicize created words.

We publish one day a week. That’s it. That’s enough. We schedule everything for Wednesdays.

Do the right thing vis-a-vis Medium — follow the rules.
