Climbing out of bed, she stretched then groggily made her way to the kitchen. Her bare feet silently padded across the marble floor as she made a cup of coffee. She took several sips before opening her work email to find a previous client again requesting her services. Ruby filled out a cream card with the information given to begin her research.

Looks like I’ll be heading to the city Gram.

Dressed in leathers, she hopped on her black Yamaha YZF-R7, destined for downtown.

Pulling into a familiar alley she shut the bike off and began walking as several homeless men approached, clothes ragged and dirty from life on the streets.

Hoo-we, look at you.” One of the men whistled as they circled her.

Oh George, you say that every time. I just think you’re lonely.” She smiled at his dirt-streaked face. “I have something special today.

The men looked on as Ruby removed her backpack. Her white teeth flashed as she handed each man a bottle of water and a thick sandwich.

Thank you, Miss Ruby.” Was spoken by each, words flowing on top of each other.

If you’d like a trim, find something to sit on.” The men scattered in search of something when a thin man returned with a broken crate.

Ruby shared stories of grand adventures, the men leaning in as they hung on her every word, as she cut their hair. The men most of the world chose to ignore, were an outlet for her.

When she had finished trimming the last man’s hair, her eyes smiled as she looked them over. Pointing across the street, “Those two houses over there, they will let each of you shower. There are fresh clothes for each of you also.

The men’s smiles consumed their faces, standing out in stark contrast against the dirt and grime.

And for you George,” Ruby reached into the backpack once again, “I think this would be perfect for you. It belonged to a friend.” She handed him a suit, tie, and dress shoes.

The men beside George clapped him on the back as his eyes misted with emotion. “Thank you, Miss Ruby.” He sniffled before continuing, “Thanks to you, I can get a job and get off the streets. You’re the only one who cares about the likes of us.

She donned the backpack and hugged each man goodbye. “You men are precious. The world just doesn’t realize it yet.

God bless you, Miss Ruby!” Their voices followed as she rode towards her unscheduled meeting.
