For more than three years, we’ve avoided talking about StarRocks, a fork of Apache Doris, whose history remains partly unknown by the majority.

Apache Doris have focused on improving its features, performance, ease of use, and reliability, while also helping expand the open-source community and supporting more users. This has been the top priority for us. However, lately we saw a comparative article by StarRocks, which was filled with bias and distasteful implications. That’s why we decided to respond to this so-called comparison.

While both Apache Doris and StarRocks are excellent OLAP database products, and the decision of which product to use is ultimately up to the user, we have some concerns about the marketing strategy employed by CelerData, the team behind StarRocks. They seem to be more and more manipulative in their marketing efforts. This trend is troubling.

Four years ago, a handful of Apache Doris PMC members made the decision to fork the project.

Prior to its open-source release, StarRocks was formerly known as DorisDB. Obviously, the name was similar to Apache Doris, suggesting a potential connection. However, it was merely a fork of Apache Doris, and the team behind it was no longer active contributors to the Apache Doris project. This was an infringement of the intellectual property right of the Apache Software Foundation (ASF), because as Apache Doris was donated to ASF as an open-source project, the Doris brand, including its corresponding copyrights, logos, and trademarks, were all donated to the Foundation, and the ASF has explicitly stipulated that no third-party company is allowed to use the Apache name or any of its project names as part of their own commercial brand.

Additionally, this happend at a time when Apache Doris was still under incubation. The existence of DorisDB significantly hindered the formal graduation of Apache Doris.

Of course, the Apache License allows close-source and commercialization based on open-source products, but the relevant entity must comply with the Apache trademark protection policy. The situation surrounding Doris and DorisDB led to a lot of confusion and trademark-related concerns.

The ASF repeatedly demanded that DorisDB follow the applicable trademark regulations. Regrettably, DorisDB consistently disregarded these requests.

It was not until DorisDB was compelled to rebrand as StarRocks and choose to open-source under the Elasticsearch license, that Apache Doris was finally able to graduate.

The dispute caused a difficult time in the development history of Apache Doris. Fortunately, the Apache Doris project has grown rapidly since its successful graduation. Today, the Apache Doris community has a global user base of over 5000 companies, 12K GitHub stars, and over 600 contributors, showing an active open-source community.

As Michael Stonebraker and Andrew Pavlo’s paper, What Goes Around Comes Around… And Around, noted, and building on that influential work, columnar databases have emerged as the main choice for data warehousing and OLAP due to their exceptional performance. Moreover, the idea of data lakehouse is expected to be the model for OLAP databases for the next decade. We wholeheartedly agree with this perspective and have been adhering to this vision for years.

The trends of database tend to be similar, especially for projects of the same origins. StarRocks, from its big picture design, the way it stores data, to most of its main features and how users use it, is based on Apache Doris and keeps building on that. Despite a rewrite of much of its codebase, StarRocks cannot escape the influence of Apache Doris — — It is a different color of the same leaves growing from the same tree.

Yes, it’s been four years since the initial fork. Both Apache Doris and StarRocks have grown and evolved in their own ways. While they share many functions, they’ve reached different levels of maturity, which we acknowledge. However, we have differing opinions on those maturity levels, so we’d like to share our thoughts on the comparison. Naturally, each project will promote its own strengths, but ultimately, the choice is up to the users.

To make a fair comparison, we’ll focus on the recommended stable versions of both: Apache Doris 2.1 and StarRocks 3.1. These versions were released around the same time and are actively being developed with regular updates. They also have similar capabilities to meet the needs in production environments.The reason we are not comparing the latest versions, Apache Doris 3.0 and StarRocks 3.3, is that they have only recently been released, and their functional maturity and overall stability in production environments haven’t been fully proven yet.
